More Animal Life Watching than Quilting!

Two weeks, and no quilting I can show!  But I have been doing some binding!  Not on my quilts, but on four quilts from the '30's made by a friend's mother.  (It just occurred to me as I typed that last sentence that it won't be many years until we will have to say and write 1930 rather than just '30's. ) I have finished one binding and about half of the second.  They are to be family Christmas gifts, so there's no rush, but I want to get them finished and out of my house!  Maybe after Christmas I can show pictures, though I doubt anyone would see them if I posted now ; ---- but I'll wait!

I have used the new sewing machine cabinet extension to hold the big quilts; it is so nice, and I just love it!  I have painted the support legs that were white; maybe "antiqued" would be a better term.  I used two shades of brown and matched the cabinet as well as I could.  Again, I'll say it's good enough for who it's for --- ME!  I really don't know how I got by before that was added; it made stitching the bindings on those big quilts so much easier!  I can't believe how much I use it for a variety of things.

While sittin' and stitchin' in the sunroom, I've watched lots of animal life again.  I looked out just at the right moment to see what I thought was a bluebird go to the bird feeder.  Then it flew up in my neighbor's yard, and I grabbed my camera.  Turned out to be someone's parakeet.  It stayed around that day, and was gone.  You may remember that last year I had a big yellow one on the feeder.  I wonder if they both belonged to the same person.

Then I looked out again, and there sat Mr. Bushee, digging and eating grass roots!  He couldn't possibly be that hungry! I feed him corn every day!

Then I found the front porch graced by a beautiful big butterfly!  I had never seen one like it here before!  On a second thought, that may be a big moth of some kind.  No matter --- lovely anyway!

Then back to the sunroom and binding!  That's when the little hummingbird stopped in for a quick drink!  I just love to watch them!  You can see where the water swept through the rose garden and washed the mulch away!  Got to get that replaced, and those weeds out too when it dries up!  *frown*

No wonder I don't get more quilting done!  *grin*

  1. You have such wonderful wildlife. I tried bird feeders, but my squirrels are too smart and just kept knocking them down. And the feral barn cats don't exactly count, but their food attracts a VERY fat, VERY big raccoon and oppossums I'd rather not have.

That is a moth. Notice his fuzzy antennae? And moths rest with their wings out, butterflies with them upright - easy way to spot 'em. (My mom is a bug nut, so we learned lots growing up. As a grown-up, I prefer to just let the bugs be, don't smoosh them, but don't make friends with them either!)

  2. I would never get any quilting done if I had your views. (Thanks for sharing). The only wildlife in my area is skunks. Not good. Smelly in fact.
Glad your new table extension is working for you.

  3. You do have some lovely distractions though! Over here that type of parakeet is called a budgerigar, or budgie for short (Australians love to shorten words when we can!). The markings on that moth are very pretty too.

  4. I have all of those except the parakeet! And ants. Lots of ants. Got bit on the wrist yesterday and swelled up something fierce so no quilting today.... :) Theri

  5. We had a parakeet that had joined with a flock of sparrows a few years ago and came to our feeders too.

Many years ago, when the children were young and we lived north of Chicago, we discovered a large parrot sitting in our maple tree when it was starting to snow. I was sure that there must be a frantic owner in the area! Not knowing who to call, I called the local police dept. to see if anyone was searching for this obviously valuable bird. A local cop arrived and asked what I wanted them to do about it... Clearly, he was not a fellow animal lover!

Will tell you in my next blog about wildlife distraction. I agree that the pleasure of watching our visitors really can slow our quilting progress. Mary

  8. Hi Love, just trying to catch up with everyone. I haven't had alot of time to look at the wildlife, but I did get a picture a couple weeks ago of a Blue Heron and my hummingbirds are at the feeder doing their fall circus moves. Connie204

  9. What lovely distractions. We have lots of very busy squirrels preparing for winter. Some areas of the city had snow last weekend. I'm not ready for that!

  10. I do love seeing Mr Bushee. Perhaps he's on a health kick after all that corn! Cheers, Ann :-)
