Have You Ever Cut Into An Old Down Comforter?

Well, don't!

This morning I cut just a very small 2-inch cut on the edge of one, and now my sunroom looks like the house of the abominable snowman!

When I first went to work in 1956 in Fort Worth, with my very first paycheck, I went to "The Fair", the fancy store across from Striplings, and bought the most beautiful baby blue satin down comfort. I had always wanted one, but can you believe that's one thing Mother never bought me! Now I think I know why!

I used it on my bed for years, until it got too dirty to be seen. When I washed it, it faded to an almost silvery gray and of course, never was pretty again. I still used it on cold nights a while longer, but finally packed it away, as is my lifelong habit!  (If I ever once had something, I probably still do --- somewhere!)

Well, when I looked in the wooden quilt box in the garage, there it was! I put it in a big garbage bag and brought it in the house to check it out. I wondered if it was really down inside and if so, what would it look like by now. So I took it in the sunroom this morning and cut a little slit along the binding edge.

Believe me! It IS down! The tiniest, fluffiest stuff I ever tried to hold in my hands! First thing I knew, it was all over my legs and floating down to the floor everywhere! I'm glad I had cut just a small slit! I'm also glad the ceiling fan wasn't on! I was at the sewing machine, so I folded the edge over and turned on the machine while holding it with one hand. I stitched that hole closed in a hurry!

It may be a real challenge to get it all up because when I try to pick it up, it moves from the air movement caused by my hand! I hope the vacuum will grab it; then I hope it doesn't clog the vacuum!

Actually, not a lot got away, but it is a mess; that's for sure!

I grabbed a handful and stuffed it in a plastic snack bag to show the grandkids when they come.

I wonder how many geese had to die to make that big down comfort?!!!

I'm glad I had not already vacuumed today. That's next on my agenda!

Thought you should know: DO NOT CUT INTO A DOWN COMFORT, FOR ANY REASON! --- unless you are outside and upwind!

  4. LOL!;) Reminded me of a pillow fight my brother and some friends had years ago. Everything was going as a normal pillow fight does until one with feather's split open a little bit. It only took a few feathers for us to get on the roll of completely demolishing that pillow. We were having the time of our lives....covering the house with pillow feathers! We thought we had cleaned up the evidence enough before the parents came home, but, to our dismay (and a week of grounding)...there were feathers in the master bedroom, in corners, under the couches, everywhere!! Even though we got into trouble for it, it was worth every minute;)
    Happy Quilting!!

  5. Were you one of those kids who always took their toys apart to figure out how they worked, too? I'm not sure it would ever occur to me to cut into the down comforter I have, but now I'm SURE it won't happen!

  6. I reminds me of a couple years ago when my DIL wanted me to help her make a lamb costume for Jonah for Halloween. They came here and brought the furry lamb fabric. When you cut it lots of the fur comes off. It got all over everything and I kept finding it lurking under various pieces of furniture for months! Note: The costume was really cute! Note to self: Don't ever offer to help sew a furry costume again.

  7. he he he... My adopted Mum cut off a large section of a comforter years ago, but fortunately it was filled with wool. It was made out of pale purple satin with the same colour cotton backing and when I started quilting I decided to restore it as she had kept the cut off section which was about 18" wide (she cut it off because she said it was too big for the bed - it was a wedding present and hand quilted too!!!). I bought some lovely sage green satin with matching cotton for the backing and went to work 're-quilting' it by feeling through the layers to the original stitching as I went. I gave it back to Mum and thankfully she's never gone near it with the scissors since!

  8. Does this qualify as a "What was I thinking?" moment? LOL.

  9. Oh NOOOOOO! I am laughing really hard and it is because I have been there. Not fun. The other one not to try is the styrofoam shipping balls. The vacuum sends a static charge out making them move in front. Then the static charge had them sticking to the walls and not so fun brick fire place. Hope you are done and relaxing by the time I read this.

  10. Love... I hope you can laugh with us by now. Good thing you didn't make a large cut. Hope all the evidence was easily picked up by the vacuum.

  12. It is three days later and I am still thinking about (and chuckling over) this post. The mom in me wants to ask "Whatever possessed you to do such a thing, especially after all these years?" When you do show your grandsons, maybe you should include one of those ' Do not do this at home' warnings.

  13. Sandy, I really don't know what possessed me that day! When I found it, it just felt so good and soft, and I remembered how much I had loved it so long ago. I "think" I was considering maybe trying to use the down for some little soft couch pillows---maybe; who knows? I read online about how to wash it again, and now I'm thinking maybe I could contain the stuff while damp maybe. (My mind's eye is at this moment seeing something like wet cat hair! *giggle*) I just don't know whether I'm up to the experiment or not! Not this week anyway; maybe after Christmas when hopefully my life will be simpler! While my mess wasn't as large as Theri's, it was much smaller particles, going everywhere; no sign of a feather, just a little knot-like pinhead thing that held all that fuzz together at one place, the largest of which was about like a pencil eraser. I'm still finding it on the ceiling fans and in the windows! I'm glad everyone had a giggle or two from the story. Probably my Christmas party guests in December will be enjoying some of it too! *frown* Why did I do it? I have no idea; just curious I guess! Or crazy! ---"Love"
