Finally Some Good News

This afternoon I determined that I would get the fireman quilt top out of the closet and put it on the bed to measure again.  I had it marked to finish at 72" x 90", but had not trimmed it.  But that's okay for now.

I just wanted to work on getting the backing together.  I had washed the fabric, but never pressed it, so I decided I felt good enough to try that.  I had thought, (and was hoping today), that indeed I had bought enough, and I think I did, with just a few inches to spare.  Of course, it will require two strips of the 40" wide fabric, and you know what that means.  All those fire trucks, ladders, helmets, Fire signs, etc. all have to match!  The fabric has a 12" repeat, so I had just a little to work with.

I hate trying to match so many things by using the regular method of seaming, so I decided to pin one length on top of the other.  I think I have that seam pinned so that I can top stitch it so that everything will be lined up pretty well.  Of course, when I do actually stitch it, I'll have to do a little finger work, but at least I think I made a little progress today.  See if you can see any big mistakes;  look for my yellow pin heads.  I think I can handle the few places when I get it to the machine, hopefully tomorrow.

Last Thursday afternoon I got to attend the retirement party for one of the guys I had worked with.  He had been a fireman there 34 years, and was a Battalion Chief; he will be missed very much by everyone.   It was so much fun to see all those old retirees, and also to see and meet all those good-looking new Rookies!  This old lady still enjoys all those hugs from all those guys too!

Then Friday morning I had a minor vertigo event, so I just decided to stay in bed most of the day.  About 7:30 PM I had to make a bathroom run, but vertigo had a pretty good grip on me.  But-----I knew I had to get the business taken care of, and I did; even got my pj's pulled up!  How I don't know; my body was totally out of control.   Next thing I knew, I was falling backward into the shower, and hit my tail bone on the tile border.  (I'm sure you've heard that saying, "I really busted my butt!"  Well, I thought I did!)  My body took the shower curtain AND ROD down on my head.  Well, what to do now!  I could barely move my arm enough to get my phone on the cabinet.  Next door neighbor didn't answer; what to do?  I decided to call my son about 20 miles away before calling my next friend on the call list.  My son told me to call 911; he'd call my friend, and be on the way.

The fire rescue guys got here just minutes before my friend, but were able to get in with the hidden key.  They came up the hall yelling, "Fire Dept. coming in."  I yelled back, "I'm in a mess, so hurry!"  My son laughed later and said probably two of the Rookies were dreading to see something they might never have seen before; but remember, I was covered up; I just couldn't get up.   They got my rolling computer chair again from the sunroom, rolled me down the hall to the living room, where they loaded me onto the stretcher and to the ambulance and to the ER.  My friend gathered up a few things for me, and my son locked the house, and we were all at the ER about the same time.  I was dehydrated, of course, so they hooked me up after all kinds of test from head to tail.  They saw no new serious injuries on any of the films, so about midnight they sent us home.

Tomorrow I have therapy again at 8:30, and I'm dreading it!  I considered postponing it, but I have only two more sessions scheduled, so I thought it best to just stick with it if possible.  We'll see.  So far, I'm really not sure the therapy has helped a bit.

One more bit of good news --- next Thursday after the last therapy, if I'm able, I get to meet up again with my high school girlfriends, here in the town where I live.  I hope my friend who has been picking me up won't be too afraid to take me.  We will be meeting at my favorite family restaurant.  We always have a good time together, even after all those years!  Even better, the sun is supposed to shine Thursday!

Maybe I'll get back to my quilt tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday.  My deadline is middle of April!

How's that for ending on a happy note?

  1. Well, I'd say this was pretty sneaky. Your blog post title didn't prepare me for the fall into the shower--but the fact that you got something done on the quilt is good news. Also good news that you didn't do any serious damage in your fall. You must not have osteoporosis, do you? My Mom would have had at least 3 fractures from such a fall!
I do hope you will see some benefit from the therapy!

    1. Apparently I have very strong bones, but I do have some arthritis. Unfortunately, therapy has not helped a lot; even my therapist agrees. Thanks so much for your encouraging words. ---"Love"

  3. I'm happy to hear that you're beginning to work on your quilting a bit, but the latest fall is so disconcerting. Do you have access to something like a walker that could help support you when you're experiencing one of these vertigo episodes? I hope you get some medical answers and real help for this condition soon.

    1. I do have a walker, but when vertigo hits, nothing I've found could keep me balanced. I wish I could explain the feeling, and I certainly hope you never experience it. ---"Love"

  4. Oh goodness. Here I was expecting a finished quilt and instead I have a mental picture of you, sitting in the tub, half wrapped in a shower curtain with a rod leaning off your head. If it wasn't so scary, it would be funny. I'm glad, though, you were "decent" for the firemen and even more glad that nothing was broken. But the back for the firemen's quilt looks good. I don't often choose backs that require matching (the busier, the better for me, as it can hide any longarming troubles!), but you seem to have that technique mastered! I do hope you get back to it soon and that the physical therapy starts to do some noticeable good.

  5. I'm so happy you were able to get some stitching done, you did a wonderful job matching the backing section. It looks great! Glad you got to go to the retirement party and you are looking forward to getting together with your high school friends. Hope it was all fun. Sorry to hear of the vertigo incident but thankfully you were not seriously injured. Take care of yourself, we want to see lots more quilting and fun things from you!
