Border Problem Solved!

Well, the second one anyway!

I must have had beginner's luck with my first major pieced border.  I still can't believe that I figured those blue squares on point exactly right to fit around all four sides of the first striped border, with no adjustment!  They met easily at the corners.

I had to "unsew" a little of the second striped border in order to miter it, but even that worked out well.  I'm feeling much better about my "almost blue" quilt.
It is 87" square.  Now the question is:  do I want to add a 6" blue border (like the corner stone fabric shown in my last post)?  That, with the binding, would make the quilt 100" square, which could be used on a king bed.  It currently is sized well for my full sized beds, but both my sons have kings.   I'll wait a few days or weeks to make that decision; at least I have the fabric!    I'm sure I'll want to have it custom quilted, so there goes a wad of money someday!  I've said before I'd never make another king quilt, but.........!  What would you do?

I think I'll "sleep" on that idea a while, starting right now!

  3. That is fabulous!!! I don't know how you managed the border, but I love it. You will have to decide what to do about the size. I would probably make it bigger because I have a king size bed. I wonder if I will be brave enough to make a pieced border one of these days. I think I will have to because they look so good and I am getting to that point of wanting to take the next step. So maybe next year.

  4. It turned out great! Good for you with the perfect pieced borders! As for making it bigger...I always try to make quilts large enough for the bed of the recipient, assuming they'll use it. If you know your boys will use it, I'd say go for the borders. At the very least, if you decide to keep it or gift it otherwise, you could remove them - ugh I know - but deciding later to make it bigger could prove much more difficult.

  5. It looks FANTASTIC. It does not surprise me at all that your pieced border came out perfectly. And did I say it is FANTASTIC? It is. The whole thing.
If you are thinking of gifting the quilt, I would add the borders to make it a king.

  6. The pieced border is especially lovely, and adds so much to an already beautiful quilt. I, too, think that the answer regarding the extra border will reveal itself to you. Good luck with whatever you do.

  8. Love, your quilt is beautiful! I love the blues and you did a great job with the pieced border. I'm sure sleeping on it will let you know if you need to add the extra borders or not. There is no rush to get it finished and you have the fabric if you decide on the additional border, so time will tell.

  9. Your quilt is just beautiful and the borders are perfect. I guess the sizing will depend on whether you want to enjoy this yourself for a while or pass it right along to someone with a larger bed. Either way, you deserve a round of applause. That pieced border truly didn't need any fussing? :)

  10. That was good luck on your border fitting so well. I always seem to have a bit too much or not enough with that type border application.

  12. You done good! *smile*

The borders look great! I know when I am "stumped", I like to let it "stew" a bit, and see how it feels a few days later (sometimes even months).
