My First Start for 2014

Back in the Fall of 2013, I went with some friends to a quilt shop a few miles away that was closing.  I bought lots of fabric at half-price; I think I mentioned it in my blog, but didn't post pictures.  One set of fabrics I decided would be for a quilt for my DIL, but I had no idea what pattern, its size, or when I'd start it.

Last week I saw a blog I'd never seen before, and before my eyes was a quilt I knew would be perfect for those fabrics!  I studied it, and decided I could do it without a pattern.  Last night I did some online research and found the pattern, free from the fabric manufacturer --- lucky me!  Sure enough, I had figured it correctly, but I printed it anyway, and today I started cutting and got all the fussy cut centers cut, and the sashings sewn together, ready for the cornerstones.  Unfortunately, I didn't buy enough of one of the needed fabrics, and I haven't been able to find it locally, within 25 miles.  So today I ordered online; I just hope it gets here in the right shade; there are several very similar, and my fabric has the pattern number, but not the color number!  I may have to make a fabric change for that part of the nine-patch cornerstone, which won't be a major disaster, but it will be a disappointment.  Anyway, the nice lady said she would try to get it in the mail today, so maybe I'll have it by Tuesday.  More about the fabrics and pattern next time.

In the meantime, here is the first block partial layout.  You'll have to imagine the nine-patch cornerstones for now.  And of course, you would know I took the picture from the wrong angle.  I didn't want to turn it here because I want the date recorded straight.  The lighting tonight was not the greatest either.
I've very pleased so far with how it is looking, but most of all, I had fun today.  You will remember I haven't sewn any since before Thanksgiving!  And that's a lo-o-o-o-o-n-g time!

Have fun this week-end, and stay safe!

  2. That is gorgeous! I love the fussy cut center and the colors, of course. Good luck with the fabric you ordered. I'm doing that same thing, but they sent me a swatch first as I didn't want to take a chance.

  5. If it looks this good now, imagine what it will be like finished. You are always so thoughtful in your choice of fabrics and design especially when making a project for others. Your DIL will treasure it I'm sure.
