"Sofia's First Trip Around the World"

I finished the quilt for my friend's little granddaughter-to-be-born-soon.  (How's that for a new hyphenated word? *wink*).  It is 41" square; I didn't want to have to piece the back, and I barely made it.

I had been wanting to make a Trip Around the World quilt for a long time, and this seemed the perfect time to do it.  There are 441 little squares that finished at 1.5", plus the five borders.  No, I didn't sew all those little squares one at a time.  I sewed the strips together into a tube, then made 2" cuts and then unsewed one appropriate block to make the ten rows in each quarter.   Next I made four more cuts to join the quarter sections together, adding the pink center block to set them all together. Actually it was fun, and easy too, once I caught on to what I was supposed to be doing.

Until my last quilt, the Cheerleader one, I had always stitched the binding on top, turned it to the back, and then hand stitched it down, which takes me a long time.  I really do prefer to do it that way, but I guess for kids' quilts, maybe machine stitching the binding is better --- maybe.  Anyway, I've learned how to machine stitch the binding.  The Cheerleader quilt was not as successful as I would have liked, but I could live with it.  I tried really hard on this one, and actually I'm pretty pleased all the way around with how it turned out.

"Sofia's First Trip Around the World" will be going to the baby shower September 12.

You would not believe the mess my sunroom was in when I finished this quilt, and the sewing closet was a total disgrace!  Two weeks ago I managed somehow to knock a couple of tubs of fabric down off a shelf, and fabric covered the floor!  (I should have take a picture; you really would not believe it!)  I just closed the closet door, and left it until yesterday.  I found the floor last night, and today I've cleaned and re-arranged books, rulers, fabrics, etc. ---- you know, all that stuff we "collect"!   I'm not finished yet; in fact, it may take all week!  I'm finding things I had forgotten I had, and a lot of it I'm wondering "Why did I think I needed that?"  I'm not really too deep into the fabric pile and drawers yet, but I'm positive I'll not live long enough to even cut it up, much less get it all sewn together!  AND, I bet you are the same way!  Right?  Maybe I'll show some pictures along the way, and then again, maybe not!

Hope you are having fun quilting this week; I'm sure I won't be!

---"Love"

  1. AHH That turned out GREAT!! I would have been dumb and sewn all those tiny squares individually. How fun doing them that way! Great job and your quilting is amazing! That sweet little baby is going to look so precious on it.

  3. That's a terrific way to make a TATW and the results are charming. It's just the right amount of pretty for a new baby girl. Nice work on the machine binding. I've only ever tried it on small projects. A few weeks ago, the wheel feel of my cutting table/cupboard and I had to empty it to effect the repairs. Sheesh, there's a lot of fabric stuffed into those little cupboards! I think only quilters can cram 10 times more stuff into a cupboard than regular folk. It's a gift.

Messes are a little fun sometimes, like when you get to find things you forgot all about. ;)
