I got all 48 little pieces cut out last night for the 6 1/2" block, no problem. I began sewing them together this morning in the order given on the pattern. Then when I cut those 2-layered squares down the middle to make all those half-square blocks, I had more little blocks than I knew what to do with almost. I finally got the little pieces all arranged on a board so I could sew them all together in order.
The main problem I had was my left hand couldn't seem to hold on to those tiny pieces. That hand has tingled 24/7 since my first stroke 7-5-07; not fun! I always tell everyone if you have anything you want dropped, just put it in my left hand! My right hand is not in much better shape, but it does work for me most of the time. It was sore today from a hard therapy workout yesterday. I probably should have waited until another day to work on the block, but I wanted to get it done. 'Nuf complaining, right? Just maybe!
I worked most of the day on it, bending over many times to pick up the tiny pieces off the floor. I finally finished the block late this afternoon. Got my 6 1/2" ruler to trim it. All the outside points were there; that's good! However, somehow along the way, the ruler slipped a bit I guess, and when I moved the ruler away, guess what! One corner is pretty short the outside 1/4" on a couple of the points! Rats! (You know that's what I said, don't you?)
I was so tired, and I just decided to deal with it sometime later before it's time to put the 48 blocks together IF I stick with the plan long enough to get them all made.....and hopefully I will. However, if I keep having that much trouble handling such tiny pieces, I may just make a small table topper!
Here's my Week 5 block:

| I can live with it, for right now anyway. |
I do think it is a beautifully designed block, and I've enjoyed making all five blocks so far.
I had to help with a funeral dinner at church yesterday, and another one is scheduled for Monday Seems like they usually happen in three's; hope that doesn't happen next week!
The weather has been beautiful here this week. I've really enjoyed being in the yard a bit.
Now if I can just get myself in the mood to start on another quilt project, maybe tomorrow? That would be more fun than cleaning house, for sure!

On my word - 48 pieces for a six inch block! It is a lovely block though. Might skip that one though.
ReplyDeleteThe block is gorgeous! If they're all that beautiful, you should persevere...you'll have a wonderful quilt. We're headed for a predicted beautiful weekend here...after a round of heavy, wet, disgusting rainy snow just Thursday. I'm very ready for spring, but some with the urge to quilt this month's UFO, so we'll see where the day takes me! I hope you find motivation for a new project today, too.
ReplyDeleteOh dear Love, I knew there was a good reason I haven't attempted block five yet. My hands have a habit of dropping things, too. Your block looks very nice from where I am sitting. Maybe there is a way you can replace just the bits that were shorted. Spring is really settling in here, too. Lots of pretty green shoots from my perennials and the beautiful sound of robins singing each morning and evening.
ReplyDeleteWow--sounds challenging! I haven't made any of the blocks, but have been saving the patterns. Your post makes me want to attempt this block just to see what I can learn from it. Yours looks really good, and no one will know all the frustration it caused you!
ReplyDeleteLove, your block is beautiful! Those tiny pieces can be a challenge but the finished block is fantastic! Hope you get to start on something new soon!
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess you are ahead of me on this block! I about croaked when I saw it. Yours is beautiful! I've started looking at fabrics - that's all so far.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of little pieces in a 6.5" block! Looks great though. You should be proud you persevered. And just consider all the bending to pick up pieces as building extra exercise into your day :)
