I really didn't want to put just plain white or muslin on the back, especially since I had a few inches of five of the 30's fabrics left. I knew I'd never use those again, so I grabbed a pencil and paper and stated figuring and drawing to come up with a plan. It actually went together quite easily, though at one point I almost did what one of the quotes says; you figure out which one! *giggle* After I got the two vertical strips together, I tested how to place them. I first tried reversing one strip so that different fabrics would be side by side (except the center red), but somehow I didn't like that look. So I just kept the same fabrics side by side. At least they are out of the stash, except for a few small scraps.
Before I put the top border on, I found the little wordy strip that had been with the Quilter's Quotes, and I decided to put it at the backing top. It says, "Quilts like friends are put together piece by piece with love and gives warmth from the heart." (Syntax not really correct, but that's the way it is printed.) Maybe you can see it if you double click.
Now I have a question for you. What should I do with these?
These are the tiny scrap triangles I decided to stitch together rather than trash them. They are all properly trimmed, but I decided to just bag them for now and put them in the 30's bin. Maybe someday I'll make a pillow, or whatever. Sometimes I question my sanity!
I can't decide whether to sandwich and quilt the flimsy soon, or pack it all away and get on with something else. It shouldn't take too long to quilt if I just straight line it with the walking foot, but I'm also thinking maybe it would be a good one to practice some free motion quilting on since it's just a fun quilt anyway, and certainly not a show quilt. I'll decide in a few days.
I did finally get the binding and label finished on "My Blue Stars". Here's a final look, along with a look at the backing fabric which I love.

Oops! I didn't get a picture with the navy binding.
Okay; here it has the navy binding. Use your imagination. It does really look good against the red border. I love this backing.
Just had to show a closeup of the musical fabric again. I love this quilt! It was quilted entirely with my walking foot.
Got to get ready for church. I'm playing for the special music tonight!
I'll be watching for what all of you have been working on.

I like both backings you show here. The pieced one is more work than I am usually willing to do on a back, but I love the look of what you patient people are able to create. :)
ReplyDeleteYou could have followed the backing on your Blue Stars quilt for the quilting pattern. LOL
Make a mini quilt with those bonus triangles!! Did you expect any other answer from me?
Yea! Backing made, now it's all ready when you are! That will be a pretty quilt! Love the backing for the blue stars quilt, too. It is perfect! All of those little hst's with some sashing would make a darling dolly quilt! That's something I have to make for my little GD, she asked me to make her some more quilts for all her "babies". Have fun Love!
ReplyDeleteOf course, I would say to make a doll quilt with the small HSTs! I love the way you did the backing. I will vote for you quilting it right away. I do like to get it all done as soon as possible. However, I do have a 3 flimsies hanging in the closet. I bought some fabric on sale today at the LQS for the backings. I need to get busy, but I've been so busy with craft shows and there is another one on the 18/19 of this month. Tomorrow I'm having cataract surgery on my right eye.
ReplyDeleteWell, you're making up for lost time, for sure! There was a quilting slump in there for a bit, but two quilts, one completely finished, in such a short time is wonderful. I love the back for your patriotic quilt and the binding is perfect. The back for the quilty quotes quilt is also perfect - and a perfect way to use up those scraps you know you'll never use (until you do...)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful as always. I think you have gotten back into the swing of sewing up a storm! I love the layout of your stars quilt.
