Time to Share Some Good News and About My Recent Fabric Purchase

In my last post, I mentioned that my #1 son had taken me to Hobby Lobby for some much needed fabric.  Who would have ever thought I needed more fabric?!!  Certainly not me!  However, a few weeks ago GS#2 (oldest son of my second son) called and said he and his wife were going to make me a Great Grandmother in September.  That will be my first Great Grandchild---at age 81!   (My #1 Son has a 6-yr old step-granddaughter whom we all love,  but this will be my first in the bloodline, and I'm really excited about the little boy who will be here before we know it!  Since his dad and grandfather are both cowboys, the poor child will have to be a cowboy too to live in that home!  Still no girls born in the family since me!  Isn't that strange?

So of course, I needed to get some baby cowboy fabric to make him a quilt, and I found exactly what I had wanted.  My plan was to get it all cut, and then sew on it at retreat.  However, when I made the two test blocks, I got so excited that I just couldn't stop. Today I got the borders on it, can you believe?   It just kept growing bigger, and ended up being 65" x 53", big enough for a crib quilt, or even perhaps a youth bed, but that's okay; maybe he will enjoy it until he gets too tall for it!

I had some scraps left and I'm thinking I'll make a smaller "baby" quilt from them, so he can be a little cowboy from birth.  If I get that all worked out, I'll work on that at retreat and will share it later.  I do plan to work on my embroidery quilt at retreat, but I think I better get this baby business finished before he comes in early September!   Right?

Here's the finished flimsy, and a couple of close-ups.

I saw this pattern on Pinterest, and made with the same fabrics;
simple 9-patch and snowball blocks.
The single little roper is the center block.  He will have to learn to rope!

Tonight I cut a few more pieces for my embroidery blocks, and still want to cut a few more before putting more together; it's easier to add variety when more pieces are cut.  I have the sashings cut and will cut the cornerstones too so I can work on that project at retreat too.

Wednesday I saw a new ear doctor for second opinion.  He agrees that I have Meniere's  Disease, and said there really is no cure.  He did say a "no salt" diet would help relieve my dizziness, so I found a couple of salt substitutes I'm going to try.  I'm just not sure I can totally give up salt; I love it too much!   Today's been a little tough, but I'm determined to hang in there!  Still haven't been anywhere, except the doctor, and then to Walmart for a few things.  So glad my #1 son is so willing to take me!

Hope everyone has a fun and safe July 4th.  I'll just be at home, and that's just fine with me!

  1. I love the cowboy quilt, it is adorable! I used the same cowboy fabrics in a baby quilt back in Nov. 2015 for my grandson's quilt. https://sunshine-marsha.blogspot.com/2015/11/its-about-time.html
    It is such cute fabric. You have been making lots of projects and making lots of progress, that is good to hear. I love salt, too, it would be so hard to give it up. Hope you can find a substitute that tastes good. Have a wonderful 4th!

  2. The quilt is adorable and congratulations on your upcoming great-grandmotherhood! I completely understand about a quilt getting away from you because you're so excited about it. The embroidery quilt will wait, baby will not! And I love making baby quilts larger than expected. More than once the new parents have mentioned that they've used it on nights when the baby just won't sleep and they end up in the rocking chair or on the floor in the nursery and are glad for the warmth. But it also can be used longer, too, on beds and for naps if it's larger. I'm sorry to hear of the diagnosis, but at least it gives you an answer and some direction for helping lesson the symptoms. Salt would be hard for me, too! Give me a choice between a bag of pretzels and a bag of chocolates and 99% of the time, I'd choose the pretzels! I hope one of the salt substitutes works for you, but in general, cutting out salt is so hard - it seems to be in everything!! I look forward to seeing more embroidery blocks, what you decide to do for the second baby quilt and hearing about retreat!

  4. I love this snowball nine-patch combination, it has a complex appearance but the blocks stitch up easily. The combination of your checked fabric with the cowboy print is so sweet. The larger size will make the quilt useful for many more years than a tiny baby size. I think that's always a great idea.

  7. That is just such a cute quilt for a little cowboy!
    Wow--no girls in the family since you? That has to be some kind of record, don't you think?
    Hope that the salt free diet will give you some relief.

  8. The baby quilt is so cute! And perfect for a baby boy - especially a baby boy born in Texas!! I feel the same way as Katie about salt - my favorite snack my whole life - is pretzels, but they have to be salty ones. I'm real picky about my pretzels. I try not to get them very often because I can't stop eating them. Having a condition like vertigo, though, gives you a real good reason not to eat a lot of salt. I hope it works for you because you aren't ready to throw in the towel yet - you still have a lot of quilts to make!

  9. Congratulations Love. My son was fortunate to know his great-grandmother for a number of years and he treasures the memories. That's a darling quilt you've made for the next wee cow poke of the family. Reducing salt in your diet is quite difficult especially as you need some and it's liberally used in processed foods and prepared meals. I was going to make a remark about finding some balance in life but that's part of the problem right? (I hope that didn't read back as flippant!) You are an amazing lady Love. Live life to the full.
