Here it is the first of December, and my home barely shows it! I still haven't sewn any really.
I did get the new binding on my son's camping quilt, "Wish I Wuz There", that I made for him in 2005. Some of you APQ quilters might remember it, probably not. He had brought it over a few weeks ago for repair. At first I was aggravated and a bit horrified really about the shape it was in! Then I got hold of myself, and remembered that in 2005, my two grandsons were 10 and 12 years old, and there was no woman in the house at that time. My son took the boys camping a lot, and apparently the quilt had gone with them every time. After all, the quilt does have a camping/fishing theme! When I came to my senses, I realized I should be happy the three of them had enjoyed it so much. It truly is worn smooth out! And I do mean "smooth"!
It lay here several days, and I finally decided to get a new binding on it. I dug in my stash and can you believe I found the same fabric scraps from 2005, and enough for the binding! I got the binding made, but decided the quilt had to washed before I'd fix it. So last week when son came, we took it to the laundromat. It weighs a ton, and I was't about to put it in my old washer and dryer! Then in a day or two, I got the new binding on and he took it home Thursday when he came to get me for Thanksgiving Dinner at his house. He was so glad to get it cleaned and fixed.
I took a few pictures, none of them very good.
The girl who quilted it for me did an excellent job, stitching fish and tents in the borders, and a few fishing poles around too. Maybe if you look close, you can see the fish in the block below, and a tent in the corner block.
I added a new label, saying I was glad to know that they actually used (up) and enjoyed the quilt!
During the last three weeks, I considered trying to make a new quilt for him, but decided I couldn't finish it before Christmas, so I decided not to even get started on it. I'll need to finish the firemen's quilt after Christmas, so I'll wait on son's and hopefully have it ready for his birthday in April.
My only Christmas decorating so far is getting all my Christmas quilts out and hung or in place. Son hung all but one, and I found it later. Next trip he will hang that one too. I can't reach the shelves where all my pretty things are (can't get on the ladder!) , and I'm grieving a bit about that. His job is keeping him busy with extra hours and not much time to come here. (That's retail for you!) But he likes the money, so I'll have to wait. I'm not putting as much out anyway, but I do want a few of my favorite things out. Maybe later this week.
Haven't been to church in six weeks now, but I watch the service on facebook, which helps my feelings.
I've not had a serious vertigo event in a week now, but today I'm a little more wobbly than usual, so I'm taking it slow and easy. I'm hoping a friend can take me to pick up meds and then to Walmart one day this week. I think the weather will be fairly nice and cool, but not bitter cold I hope!
Yesterday I dug out about 20 of my Christmas CD's, and played them all afternoon, and again today. That beautiful music is much more pleasing than watching football or the news all day. It will take several days to play them all. They are beautiful!
I've rambled long enough! Just haven't had much company this past week, but that's okay; I've been busy, doing mostly nothing as you can tell.
Hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that you will be careful as you go Christmas shopping. Seems like everyday in the metroplex someone (or several someones) gets robbed or shot. I really don't even want to get out there! Also I worry about my son getting off late at night. But I'm trying to make the best of it all!

It is wonderful that the quilt was so loved, but I understand, too, the sadness at seeing something you put so much effort into being treated that way. The repair looks good and how awesome that you found the same fabric to use again! I'm sorry to hear your decorating has been pared down, but the Christmas CDs sound like a wonderful choice. Work has started mixing in holiday tunes already, but not too often, so I'm okay with it. It's the places that play it constantly from about Halloween on that are annoying. (Wait until the last week before to go that crazy!) I hope your son continues to find time to help you with decorating and a trip out will hopefully do you some good. In the meantime, do what you can, but I understand the frustration of knowing what you could do in the past and can't do now.
ReplyDeleteThat old quilt looks pretty nice considering all the love it's received over the years. I know when we give a quilt away it's a double-edged sword, we want them to be used and loved, but we also want them to stay fresh and pristine like they were when we made them. We quilters are a funny lot, eh? Take care of yourself and hope you are feeling much better so you can enjoy the holidays.
ReplyDeleteIn a guy's mind a quilt with a camping theme should be going camping. :)
ReplyDeleteCan't believe you found enough of the very same fabric for the binding.
Sorry you aren't feeling up to your usual activities. Hope things improve for you soon!
