Life Sure Gets Frustrating Sometimes!

My computer has served me very well since 2005 --- not a problem at all until about a month ago when I began seeing a black monitor screen occasionally after start-up.  It seemed to happen more during daylight, and after 11 PM everything worked just fine.  Since I'm a night person anyway, I just continued to endure until a week ago today when I took the CPU into what I thought was a large reputable store which advertised "We Fix Computers!"  Boy, did they fix mine!  In fact, I may never get it back to what it was before they said it got sick!  To make a very long story short, they wiped the hard drive unnecessarily, and then installed Windows XP Home Edition in place of the Professional Edition I had, without telling me.  After $215, I still am not a happy camper!  After 3-4 trips back telling them I still had a black screen, I called Dell where I had purchased everything, and found it was a monitor problem all along!  "Reputable Store" never considered that even though I had asked twice; "No, your CPU is very sick!  We will reformate and restore everything."  They fell way short on the restoration, but they did a super job on the formatting!  Yesterday I received a nice new monitor from Dell (on sale by the way), and if and when I ever get everything back in place (programs, icons, homepage, settings, all those things!), I should be much happier!  For an old, computer illiterate lady, it AIN'T easy!

On last Monday, I had my air conditioner serviced for the summer, and everything was fine! Wednesday while trimming the spent rose blooms off, I heard a loud screech, metal to metal, from the outside unit!  AC man came Thursday, ordered a fan motor, and is to install it today.  With my luck it will probably get to 90 degrees before he gets here.  So far, I've kept the house closed and the ceiling fans on, so I haven't suffered, but HE may if he doesn't get here soon!

Just wait --- that's not all!  This may be the worst part of all!  About a month ago I had taken one of my big patriotic quilts to my favorite quilter and had the second ready to go also.  Last week she told me my quilts would be next onto her machine.  Tuesday she called and said her machine is down, and she will not be able to do my quilts by July 4 as promised.  She said she didn't want to risk messing them up; she had put one of hers on the machine, and was in the process of having to rip everything out.   I went into shock and could hardly talk to her at all at that moment!  I called her later that evening, picked up the quilt, and asked for referrals.  Between her and the quilt stores, and some old quilt show program booklets with names I had marked, I think maybe I will decide on a new quilter who has said they can be finished in time for July 4.  But oh, how I dread that; it's scary to me!  I have two appointments to meet two quilters Saturday and Monday, and will have to decide.  If indeed the AC cost is extremely high, I may have to decide to wait for my regular quilter anyway.  I really was counting on her beautiful work for my quilts!

Computer, air conditioner, and quilter --- all gone at one time!  Too much for this old lady!  I'm afraid to ask what else can happen!  I've been too out of sorts to even consider quilting really!  Can't work outside; don't want to get too hot with no AC!  So I've just been right here, under the ceiling fan, trying to restore my computer.  I think a hot letter to the computer repairman (?) and his boss will be the next order of business here!

In addition to all those problems, I've also suffered a severe case of "blogging withdrawal"!  *wink*  Hopefully I'll be recovering from that soon!

Happy quilting, everyone!

  1. Well, now you've had a good dose of things going wrong, so you should be in store for a long stretch of good things only!

Like you, I'm stuck relying on people making claims about what they can do with my computer when it goes down...I hate that I'm so ignorant, but short of spending all my free time teaching myself or taking classes (when would I quilt?!), there is little I can do. But stick to your guns with your trouble - those "guys" should have tried the monitor first. Just seems sensible.

As for your longarmer, one gal who did a good job for a fair price for me up and quit a few months ago. Decided the business of quilting wasn't for her, so I hear you. I do have a second gal I like, but her prices are much higher, though you do get what you pay for - she's incredible! Unfortunately, I can't afford to have all the quilts I give away quilted to such a degree.

I do hope you get a chance to get back to quilting soon. And I wish you could send some of that warm air up here. Today a high of 70 is predicted, but with the rain and wind, I'd be willing to bed the temp of 61 when I left for work this morning could be the high. Where is my summer?! Good thing I'm a quilter, as it leaves me with plenty of warm snuggly things to cuddle under when the weather gets like this!

Glad to have you back blogging, too!

  2. I'm so sorry for all your trials and tribulations! I know it is so frustrating when computers don't work. When the A/C doesn't work it is just plain torture! And now, not able to get your quilting finished on time. Yikes! Sure hope everything gets fixed soon!

  4. Chin up! (I know it is, I just couldn't resist). I'm glad your computer is back on its way to being your "usable" computer again. I was having internet connection issues with mine, hubby kept saying... its your connection, its your computer... HA! It sounds like it has been the Cable modem all along... he hasn't called yet to have it checked out. Sometimes having been in the business is good, sometimes not.

Sorry to hear about your quilter. I would recommend someone, but you wouldn't be able to visit her. Unless of course you were coming my way. *wink*. Remember MSLibra? She does a wonderful job. She quilted Entwining Love for me.

Well, I should be heading to bed, I have a yard sale to be up early for in the morning... hope the weather holds. I think I'm crazy, but hey, gotta try these things once in a while!

  5. Well you know things happen in 3's, so here's hoping that's your full dose for a long time!

I hope things work out in the end!

  6. Ah, Love, such a trial. Can someone please explain to me why men always assume the most complicated thing that can go wrong, has, but absolutely refuse to check out all the simple things first? (Nope, not getting on the soap box this morning!) Anyway, hope things work out better today, I do so miss you!

  7. Hi Love, they say that everything happens in three's. Now it's time for the good ones. I can understand totally where you are coming from.
I have never sent any of my quilts out. I am one of those stubborn people that really want to do my own. Problem, my free motion isn't very good and I don't have the extra money. I stitch in the ditch alot and don't enter any contests. The warm weather is heading for Chicago and I'm not ready for it. Hope you can get back to quilting and all is well from now on.

  8. I'm sorry you've had such a frustrating time lately, but doesn't bad luck come in threes? You should have clear sailing once your current frustrations get smoothed out. Good luck! -Joanne

  9. At least it seems like the worst is over. Glad you got the computer thing figured out...we recently had to upgrade the entire system.
Hopefully everything will settle down now and you can get back to quilting soon;)
    Happy Quilting!
