Final Word on the Donation Flags

The auction didn't go as well as I had hoped!   I guess people are just being more cautious in spending their money these days.  But relatively speaking, as compared to some of the other items, I guess my two flag projects did okay; well, the larger one anyway.  It brought in $60 in the live auction; I had hoped for more, but there weren't a lot of big bidders there for anything.

Here's a final picture; I wanted you to see the pole/stand the guy made for it.  I think he did a great job; just enough slant to let the flag unfurl.  The pole has an antique door knob for the finial.  I added the bias stripe for three ties down that side, though you can't see them here.  Everyone seemed to love both quilts, but the bids just weren't there!

The silent auction didn't do well at all.  I think the final bid on the smaller flag was $8.  I considered overbidding and bringing it back home, but then I remembered I have anothe panel of that somewhere, so I may fix one for myself, and do a better job, using a thicker batting too.

So now it's on to the big patriotic quilts.  I got started on the hand-stitching of the binding today, but didn't make much progress.  The reason?  Well, I lost a 2:00 AM battle with a door frame between my living room and den Saturday night, in the dark!  I thought I heard a car on my driveway and went to check it out, but it was actually next door.   I thought I'd never stop bleeding, thanks to Plavix and aspirin! It's NOT a pretty sight!   All that bloody area was cut pretty deep and folded back on my hand.  I rubbed it back in place best I could, put a big bandaid on it and wrapped it in that stretchy tape that sticks to itself.  Thank goodness, it's my left hand that is mostly dead anyway from the stroke three years ago!  My entire hand is turning black and blue from the bruising.  I figure this may hinder my handwork for a few days because it is still oozing.  I probably should have had stitches, but who wants to go to the ER at 2 AM!  Not this old lady!  Oh well, I guess it could have been worse!  I'll just keep it wrapped most of the time until it's better.  I'll get that binding on somehow and soon!  Then I'll start on the next one!

Be careful, even in your own home!  And have a good week with lots of quilting!

  2. Love, I am sorry about the quilts, but, Hon, you need stitches in that hand! You may also need a tetanus booster. If you don't want to go to the ER, then at least go to your primary. That cut is way too deep! GO TO THE DOCTOR!

  3. Oh my goodness that looks NASTY! I've had a few fights with walls and doorframes in my house, too. They don't always happen at night, though! (I'm a little klutzy...) I hope it heals quickly so you can get back to quilting without worrying about oozing on things.

I'm sad to hear the auctions didn't do well, but you and I both have some previous experience there... But you did your part in working hard and donating some beautiful items.

  4. Oh, that looks nasty. Love, if it's still oozing, please go to the doctor and have it checked! It may still need stitches, and you don't want infection in there!

I'm sorry the auction didn't go as well as you hoped. Both projects were made with such care that I'm sure they are still appreciated. Just think of it as a dash of patriotic in someone's home who needed some but didn't have enough to pay more for it.

  5. Love, Looks like you need stitches. I'm also on plavix and aspirin and no it's not fun when you hurt yourself. I also look like I've been a fight half the time because I look at something and bruise. I,too, am sorry about the auction. I'm sure that it they have gone to appreciative people. This recession is hurting so many people. Please go to the doctor. Connie204

  6. Your poor hand really did lose a battle. I am with the others, you may need a tetnus shot and possibly antibiotics.Take care of yourself!

Sorry about your lovely flags. It is difficult when the bids are low. It is hard to figure out. I donate some minis very other year to the silent auction at our guild's quilt show. The woman who used to run it always asked for two identical minis if possible (one for Friday's auction and one for Saturday's auction). One year the same mini went for the minimum bid one day and $35 the next day. Exactly the same little quilt. In any case, yours were beautiful and I am sure whoever took them home will enjoy them.

  7. Oh Love, how awful! I hope it mends soon - it looks very nasty though!

Pity about the flags, but I think you're right about the current economic climate. The flag looks lovely on it's pole too.

    Hugs.

  8. Your quilts are beautiful, sorry you didn't get higher bids but I'm sure the people who bought them will love them!

Your hand looks bad, hope you feel better soon! I'm with everyone else, I encourage you to see your doctor to get it fixed up right and avoid an infection. Take care!

  9. I'm not one to recommend doctors on little things, but I would at least go get that checked out. If not that, are you at least applying antibiotic cream? That would help.
You should feel proud of yourself that you donated your time and effort to the auction. Economics have kept me from getting out over the past six weeks, and I don't see any sign of it getting better out there either. I know I'm hanging on dearly to what little we have.
    Happy Quilting!!

  10. Oh dear "Love". I'm chiming in as well. I hope your hand gets better quickly.

    do take care of yourself!

And as for your flag quilts. You made them to help out at the auction. You did your part, and you should be very proud of that. We cannot control the "bidding" process. And as everyone else has mentioned, those who won them, will appreciate them. Without your contribution of the flags, the auction would have made that much less.

  11. Good gracious Love - that's a nasty knock. Look after that. What a shame about your flags - the look terrific. If it's any comsolation, folks here are hanging on to their pennies. Take care, Ann :-)
