My First String Quilt

Here's my first String quilt top. It is 60" x 60".  It was fun to put together, but if and when I make another one, I'll try to do a few things differently.  I would  not have any strips finished wider than 1"; I do like variety in the width, but 1.5" is just too wide in my opinion, except for the center white and pink "sashings".  The white finished at 2", and the pink on each side finished at 1/2", which I really like.

I decided to use a finished 2"piano key border, outlined on both sides by 1/2" pink, white, and pink. (Had to use up those extra strips somehow!  *giggle*)   The outside pink will be the binding to complete the plan.  I hope I can get it to be 1/2"!  (See the short pink strip lying on the left side.) Can you believe I still have a few more strips to do something with later.

This pictures show the true colors much better.
Oh dear!  I really hope I can get that binding exactly right down that white strip!  I probably should have made the white outside strip wider and then I could trim it to the right width after quilting is finished.   I haven't decided what to do about the quilting yet, but it may be a while before it's quilted!  (I still have that pink and blue kaleiodoscope to get quilted --- and that stack and whack!  I've never had that situation before!)

Tonight I began trying to machine quilt another little wall hanging; don't know how that's going to work out.  Maybe I can show you next week some time.  In the meantime, I hope you all get some quality quilting time!

  1. This quilt looks amazing. I love the piano key border. It brings the whole quilt together. Even though you would do a few things differently next time, I think you did a nice job getting the quilt to balance out right. Nice job!

  5. You've been busy! Must be that new table extention that got you sewing at top speed! I love the borders. And I really like the quilt overall. I like the white and pink in there that gives the whole quilt more of a sense of direction than most string quilts.

  9. Your string quilt has come together beautifully. You may think you need to do things differently next time, but I think this one turned out perfectly. The borders are a great choice to frame it, too. Good luck with the binding!
