My Pledge of Allegiance - 2011

For the past few years, I've tried to finish a new patriotic little quilt for July 4, and I've done it again this year.   I had loved so much the one I donated to the church youth auction this year, and so I decided to make another one for myself, with a couple of different fabrics I had as scraps --- just enough to make the top and bottom stars.  I also decided to print the Pledge of Allegiance on my computer rather than using the all-over Pledge fabric used in the first one.  Some of it I like better; some not as well.  If I make it again sometime, maybe I'll get it all right!  Here's this week's result:

Actually I have two new ones this year; The Wave Salute is hanging in the sunroom, without gold stars!

Then there my little tiny flag, made in 2010.
While not really patriotic, My Two Cents Worth, made in honor of my father who was a rural letter carrier for 44 years, is hanging in the sunroom also.  It was finished July 4, 2009.
My two large patriotic quilts with handwritten quotations of Founding Fathers are unfortunately folded and on a living room chair this July 4.  They are normally stored flat under the bedspread on the spare bed, except when displayed for special days, but GS#3 is still sleeping on that bed this week, and for a while longer.
They are "America - Founded as a Christian Nation", and "Wise Words of Our Founding Fathers."

A few more  little patriotic quilts are scattered around the house, which is in disarray way too much to take new pictures today, so I'll use the completion pictures.  The bargello flag was finished July 4, 2008.  (Can you believe I couldn't find on the computer the original picture of the bargello?  So it is a new picture.)

The little patriotic Trip Around the World was finished  in July, 2007, definitely not my best work!.
The single Irish Chain Patriotic Stars was finished July 4, 2003.   I hand-quilted it with stars in the white blocks, though they don't show in the picture.

I'm still sorry I let this next one get away from me at last year's youth auction!  I should have bought it back!  I have the picture as my screen saver, and love seeing it there everyday.  It makes me think!

Hope all of you have a wonderful and safe July 4.  Please do take time to remember what the day is all about:  Independence and Freedom!  Let's all honor our Flag this week-end.  In fact, let's honor it everyday!

  2. Well, "Love", no one could ever accuse you of not being patriotic! I really like your newest finish, and The Wave Salute is one of my favourites. I hope you have a special July 4th. Our Canada Day was July 1 (our 144th birthday).

  3. You have such a wonderful collection of patriotic quilts and I think "My Two Cents Worth" is definitely patriotic. Not just the colors, but the USPS is definitely an American thing! (My dad is a recent retiree of theirs, so I may be a bit biased...) Your house must be decorated nicely, though I'm not sure anything could top what you showed up at Christmas. One day I'll find the time and energy to make seasonal decorations. Have a wonderful holiday!

  4. Beautiful R/W/B quilts. I love that you make a new one every year.
I will be reflecting on the many freedoms we have here and the many who have dies to make it possible.

  5. You must be one of the most patriotic quilters alive!! They are all great and I love your idea of doing a new one every year. I would like to do that too, but it's a little late to start this year - besides I don't have all my stash with me (I miss it so much)! I did get the civil war block made yesterday. I probably won't do any sewing tomorrow, because we will be getting packed up to leave here on Tuesday. Hope you are able to stay cool! Don't go outside at all!
