Freedom's Star and Baby Kisses

Again, I've been busy, but this time at least I've been sewing more on some of my own projects.  I finally finished the top of the last patriotic quilt for this year!  It is the companion to the flag quilt I posted a few weeks back, and it is called Freedom's Star, with the same Henry Glass fabrics, and is 82" square.  I'm not sure when I'll get them quilted, but hopefully before next July 4! *giggle*  Obviously, the ceiling fan is playing tricks with that right-side border; it really is straight!
This week I've also completed a baby quilt top for the daughter of one of the firemen I worked with.  I'll probably try to quilt it by next week; the baby boy is due by the end of August.  I wanted it to have a fireman theme, but somehow had to blend it with the turquoise/aqua/tan colors the mother wanted, which was no easy task.  The only fire trucks I could find anywhere were in the "Cars" movie fabric, so I fussy cut them.  THEN I found the "Baby Kisses" panel in turquoise (Block Party calls it 'blue'!), and I just couldn't resist it!  So again, I was winging it, without a pattern or a clue where I was going!  (So what's new, right?!!)  When I dug in the closet for a batting, I found a piece that is 2 inches too narrow, so I'm going to trim down the side borders a bit to make that work for me!  Right now it is 47" x 39".  The backing will be the "Cars" movie fabric, and I'll bind it in the turquoise.  Here's how it looks tonight.
Last Thursday my new quilter friend came over for an all-day sew-in.  I didn't get much sewing done, but I was able to help her learn to miter three borders all at once, with stripes in the middle border; she did great!  Also she learned how to turn the corners on her bindings.  She was so happy, and the next day made a banana cake for me!  She cooks as good as she pieces!  Such a joy she is!

Folks, if it is hotter in Hades than it is in Texas this week, I surely don't want to go there!  We are into that 105-108 degree series again like last year.  I hope it doesn't last as long as last year.  I've been chasing the water sprinkler around the yard the last few days, and that's no fun, but it is necessary!

Hope everyone is staying cool, and getting lots of quilting done!

One more thing:  How 'bout those Americans at the Olympics?!!!!  Go, USA!  I've loved watching every day and night!

  1. Freedom Star is simply stunning. You should get it finished as soon as possible so you can display it year-round! And the baby quilt came out nicely, but I've learned to do my best to NOT ask the mom-to-be what colors she wants. It stops my creative juices like nothing else. But you've done a great job incorporating all the colors AND the firetrucks. And it's likely that little one will know who that firetruck is before long!

  3. Freedom Star is beautiful. The way you did the setting really pops the stars and it doesn't take anything away from the log cabin blocks. I don't think I am expressing myself well here. How about two thumbs up?
The baby quilt is so cute. I couldn't imagine how you were going to pull all the elements together, but as usual you did an excellent job.

  4. Two beautiful finishes for you! And I must say that "winging it" seems to work out very well for you :) I would have been stumped at "tan and turquoise" for a baby quilt!

  5. Yes! Freedom star is amazing! I love it. Your creativity took over on the baby quilt - a perfect way to highlight the sayings as well as to get the fire engines and the right color in it! How did you figure all that out?
