Three posts in one week! Can you believe it?
It was eleven months ago that I posted the first picture of "I'm Seeing Stars", and at that time, I stated that I would probably try to begin quilting it the next week. Actually, I think maybe I did begin trying to free motion quilt the red/white stripes; however, I was not thrilled with my work at all, and neither could I decide how to quilt the stars. I completed the binding, and then I lost interest, and hid it under the bedspread on the guest bed. Of course, I'm still not happy with my free motion quilting, but I'm not about to rip it out and start over. However, I did quilt the stars this week, and I'm very pleased with how they turned out. I had seen the quilting design in a magazine, and had saved it until I could muster the courage to try it. Actually, it was very easy; I'm sure I'll use that method again! You and I both will just have to remember that this was a free motion learning experience for me! It measures 47" x 57".
Now I'm trying to rake my courage together to attempt to quilt that stack and whack quilt that was basted together for over a year, with polyester batting, of all things. I glad I came to my senses and took that apart to remove the polyester batting! IF I do decide to quilt it myself, I'll be using cotton batting. I've been trying to decide on a plan for it, but I'm dreading having to baste (or pin) it again! Maybe next week I'll get brave enough to try it again. I may ruin the thing, but I'll never learn if I don't keep trying. Sometimes I think maybe I should just give up and get rid of all my quilting stuff and just forget all about quilting! But......I'll probably just keep on keeping on, and waste more time and money for my "fix"! I mean, what else have I got to do? (Yeah; I know! Yard work, for one thing!)
In the meantime, I may start another little quilt tomorrow! Maybe!
I'm looking forward to some special company Sunday; I'll tell you more on that next week!

You're right Love, the quilting on the stars looks great!
ReplyDeleteAnother patriotic themed quilt. I have several myself and love them all.
ReplyDeleteLove, you couldn't ruin a quilt with your quilting even if you tried! "Seeing Stars" is beautiful, even if you are not satisfied with the quilting. The lovely colors and pattern just really set it off. In the long run, no one is going to pick out your "mistakes". All they will see is a beautiful quilt! Keep on keeping on!

That is a great way to quilt the stars! I love the quilt, of course and miss my patriotic quilts, which are at home. Sometimes, I have that thought as well - why am I doing this?!?!? It doesn't last too long though. I think we are meant to quilt. Wish I could be there on Sunday too. Don't go to a lot of work - I know how you are. Hee Hee!
ReplyDeleteYour free-motion "learning experience" turned out very well. Looks great to me! And with all due respect, don't you dare get rid of all your quilting stuff and stop quilting! Unless of course it's all just a chore for you, but somehow I don't think that's the case :)
ReplyDeleteMy word we are our own worst critics! Your quilting is fine and it' s a super quilt. I had a batting disaster early on when I chose completely the wrong kind for machine quilting. Didn't do it again. It's hard to *ruin* a quilt as it's still going to be useful.
ReplyDeleteRemember done and useful is so much better than a UFO in the cupboard waiting to be perfect.
ReplyDeleteThree posts in one week means you're making up for lost time! I'm guessing you're feeling much more like yourself even if you haven't said as much. All the quilts you've been showing are fantastic and though I've not been leaving comments, I've been keeping up. You'd better not quit. Who else would have so many wonderful patriotic quilts to inspire us AND remind us to love our country every day?! Please keep quilting!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt came out beautiful! I like the quilting in the stars.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you have gotten over that impulse to quit. Your work is so beaitiful. I always told my kids if you love it do it, you don't have to be the best. :)
Hope are showing us a new project soon.
There definitely is a learning curve when it comes to free motion quilting. You only improve by practicing. I have been there and I too am not always pleased with my results but "I have come along way baby!". So don't be discouraged. I love what you did with the stars.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered spray basting - eliminates all those pins which require many stops and starts. If you try it, buy the 504 (not Joann's).
