(No doubt you will recognize my yo-yo quilt on the bed pillows.)
The donated baseball fabric was 60" wide and 60" long. I decided to take the quick path to a finish, and left it that size --- no borders, just red binding.
There was a very narrow red stripe between all the rows of hats, bats, baseballs, and the "Baseball Bats" words, all of which are about 3" high. I simply stitched with red thread through all the red stripes, used a solid red backing, and finished with the red binding. Very simple and fast!
When my friend, who drove me to a doctor's appointment earlier this week, said she needed to stop at Hobby Lobby for some thread, I saw that Texas Rangers baseball fabric. Of course, I had to have enough to cover a little 12"x16" pillow to go with the quilt. It is a perfect color match! Hopefully, some little boy will convince his parents to buy the quilt and pillow for him at the auction. Certainly it's not a prize-winner set, but I think some kid will like it.
Now I've got to finish two little projects for the guild group by Monday! At least I don't have any doctor or therapy appointments until then, so maybe --- just maybe --- I can get those finished! They both are also simple.
Then maybe I can get something started that I want to do for myself. I have many ideas whirling around in my head (notice I didn't say 'brain').
Another friend stopped by today with a big surprise. She started quilting with our church group a couple of years ago, but with a very sick husband now, she brought a lot of her fabrics to me and told me to keep what I want and pass the rest on to two other quilter friends. I kept quite a bit, but told the next quilter in line to come get what she wanted, and we sacked up the rest for the third friend. I didn't keep as much as they got. I reminded them how old I am, and said I won't live long enough to sew up all the fabric in my house, and I'm sure that's true! I felt a little guilty keeping any of it. I forgot to take a picture, but maybe I can when I get some plastic tubs to store it in next week. Anyway, it's all nice --- Moda, Timeless Treasures, Thimbleberries, etc. Most of it she had bought at that last quilter's estate sale we went to.
All I can say is: I need to be quilting 24/7, or my son will have a lot of fabric to get rid of someday! And just think --- one month (1/12) of 2016 is already in the past! Where did it go?

That's a perfect BOY quilt and I'm sure someone will want it - especially because of the Rangers fabric used in the pillow! The thing about fabric is that no matter how much you have, you always need something different to finish a project. The perfect border - the perfect backing - or whatever. You need to have a large stash to give you choices. So what if you never use all of it up. Hee Hee! It's great to get some free.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super quilt for a baseball loving child. For sure it will be snapped up at the auction. You may not sew all the fabric in your stash but at least the fabric is being passed around rather than thrown in the dumpster.
ReplyDeleteI love the baseball quilt and the pillow is perfect (though in my home state, probably not quite as appreciated!). I hope your friend is not giving up on quilting altogether, just reducing stash. I always hate to hear someone is quitting quilting - it's so much fun! But I'm glad to hear she's sharing the wealth and you're the lucky friend. Now go sew something - if you've got enough to last a lifetime, make it a good one!
ReplyDeleteThat quilt will be perfect for someone's bed. LIke Ann said, it's better to pass around the fabric than throw it out, and as Ruth pointyed out you need a stash to give you choices!
ReplyDeleteIt may be simple, but it looks great. Some little baseball fan will be thrilled with this quilt and pillow. Free fabric is the best and sharing it with friends makes it wonderful. Hope you enjoy some time sewing something for yourself soon!
