I spent most of Friday and Saturday roaming around the area, going to garage sales, estate sales, and antique shops. I spent too much at the antique shops, but I found a real bargain on lots of embroidery pieces at the last estate sale (only one piece at the first estate sale!). I also got a couple of pretty bird figurines; they are sitting on a 60" Christmas tablecloth. (You know I needed that!) Here's most of the haul.
Most of it has now been soaked in Blue Dawn and Oxiclean overnight in the bathtub, and it came out looking much better. I knew it was dirty, but really --- this dirty after just 20 minutes? It got worse later! I still have to press all of it, and unfortunate there is still more to soak! Later this week maybe.
I just have to tell you that at church tonight we had a String Ensemble from Pennsacola Christian College in Florida. All were Seniors and music majors, of course. Four violins, a cello, accompanied by a pianist, and it was amazing what they presented! Beautiful arrangements played to perfection! It was very moving, and some of the pieces were fun too. I'm so glad I didn't miss it. Ruth, it made me think of your grandson and his organ recital a few weeks ago that I wish I could have heard.
After taking care of a little business tomorrow, I'm hoping for a quiet week at home. I may have to postpone pressing the embroidery. I need to get those blue stars quilted if I can before July 4! I keep getting distracted!
Just so you know, hot weather has definitely arrived in Mid-North Texas!

Hi Love what beautiful purchases you have made, boy they were dirty, can't wait to see what you do with them, hope you have a relaxing week my friend xx
ReplyDeleteI just can't stop thinking about what I'll come up with, but I just must hold off until I get those blue stars quilted, or maybe until I give up on the stars; hope that doesn't happen! ---"Love"
DeleteWhat treasures you've found. It's hard to realize just how dirty things are until they're truly clean, but it's good you have a nice big bathtub to help with the work! I'm so curious to see what you're planning with all these old linens, but if it has to wait until the latest patriotic quilt gets finished, I guess I can make it! The hot weather is here, too, but in general has been a bit bipolar...65 for a high one day, 86 the next and then back down to the 60s again the next... It's hard on a body to adjust that fast, but I'm enjoying the cooler days and not looking forward to the all-the-time hotter days.
ReplyDeleteAnother set has been soaking all day, and will until tomorrow, when another set gets to soak. It is so hot and dry here that I'll have to run the sprinkler all day again tomorrow. I hope to get the Blue Stars sandwiched tomorrow maybe. ---"Love"
DeleteThe comment thing is very frustrating. I hope Blogger fixes it soon!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing your plans for the vintage embroidery
pieces!
I hope I don't disappoint myself and everyone else with the embroidery project, which is on a temporary hold, except for dreaming about it! In addition to the blogger problem, now Yahoo has sent notice about stopping Messenger. I don't think it will affect my mail; not sure, but I hope not! Technology problems weary me! ---"Love"
DeleteThose linens are lovely! I also can't wait to see what you do with them because I have quite a few that I need to do something with. Saturday when I bought the green quilt top, there was some lovely embroidered and tatted items and I was thinking about going back on Sunday to see if that had things at half price, but when Jakob showed up at church I wanted to spend time with him instead. I had a dinner ready so he and his dad came over for dinner. I knew Jakob was coming home soon, but didn't know the exact day and he got home on Saturday. BTW, my DGD Abby goes to Pensacola Christian Academy which is connected with Pensacola Christian College. In fact, the education students from the college work in the school and we are very impressed with the teachers that Abby has had.
ReplyDeleteAfter studying patterns, etc., I think some of the embroidery patterns may be larger than I really had envisioned, but somehow I'll make something work when I actually start cutting (a nasty word to a couple of my friends). If the college students that are helping at Abby's school are as great as those we saw, she will surely benefit from them. ---"Love"
DeleteOh, you really made a haul! Great finds in vintage linens.
ReplyDeleteI understand the dirty water from the soaking. I have a quilt from my MIL's estate. I think I soaked it 4 times before the water came out clean enough for my taste.
Good luck with your designing. :)
I think all of the pieces have now been cleaned (still a few spots but not in the embroidery designs), and are folded and stacked, waiting for pressing. Today I worked on clipping raveling threads and pressing on my Blue Stars. Hope I can finish it by July 4. Then I can concentrate of the embroidery project. ---"Love"
DeleteI love your new bird figurines, but I can’t imagine what you have planned for all of the embroidered pieces. The black and white quilt from your last post is beautiful, and will make a lovely gift for your neighbour.
