Finally a Finish, and a Few Other Things

After looking at my black and white Log Cabin quilt, I decided it needed some quilting in the white portions, so I added two lines of stitches in all the white areas, and it looks much better to me!  I never did find the binding I thought I had prepared, so I took care of that little matter, and got the binding finished last Tuesday, complete with the label also.   With the binding, it now measures 77" square.   I can finally mark that one off my list!
I just can't seem to get a full picture!  Top and bottom looks just like sides.

That's my Texas Wildflowers and a bedspread peeking out underneath

The stitching really was needed in the white areas.
The fabrics really do not appeal to me, but every time my next door neighbor comes over and sees this quilt, she says she thinks it is her favorite of all the quilts I've made.  I have decided to gift it to her next week.  She and her husband (he died in late June 2017) have been the best neighbors I've ever had for the entire 40 years I've lived here; they both have helped me in so many ways through the years.  I'm sure she will be surprised when I tell her to look at the label.  I just feel like that's what I need to do.  She is still missing him so very much; maybe she can find a little comfort from the quilt.

I'm continuing to look for embroidered vintage pieces at Estate and garage sales for a project.  Today I found a few pieces of embroidery I think I can use.
I will have to soak them clean, of course./
At another Estate sale, I found only two pieces of embroidery, but I made a small haul in the quilting department.  One table topper already together; another 18 blocks, and then another set already cut, ready to make the blocks, with one 9-patch sewn to go by.  Also included a couple of hankies for a friend, and the pink and green crocheted squares.

18 blocks; don't know when or what I'll do with them right now.

I plan to check some more sales tomorrow, but i've got to stay focused on emboidery!  Did you notice I didn't mention buying any crystal or glass?  I did buy a Tupperware pie container to replace the one someone "borrowed" from me after a funeral dinner; never saw it again!

Most of my friends go on trips to other states or countries for vacations; I tell them I go to Estate sales and garage sales, and Big Lots!  Doesn't cost me nearly as much, and I have fun, and then can sleep in my own bed!  It works for me!

One more thing; eighteen of my classmates got together a couple of weeks ago when the one guy who had moved to Mississippi several years ago came back for a visit. I dare say not many high school classes still get together like we do after so many years.  We had graduated high school 61 years ago to the day we were together. We had a blast and more good food than we could eat!  This is the year we all turn 80 years old.  We always get together when he comes back, and we are wondering if this might have been his last trip.  It's a long way to come from Mississippi to Texas alone.

Got to get to bed so I can get up early and get out of here, on the look!    Sounds like we may get a storm during the night; I hope not, but we do really need the rain, so I won't complain.

Hope your week is going well.

  1. That is a beautiful quilt, and a thoughtful gift that will be much loved by your neighbor. Have fun on your quest, (not many good estate sales in these parts so we don't bother anymore).

    1. Thanks for your sweet comment. I'm finding it difficult to find much around here too. Either today's generation has decided to keep the embroidery (which I doubt), or they are trashing it (I hope not!). I'll go looking this morning again. ---"Love"

  2. I'm glad to hear from you - I'd started to worry a bit! The black and white quilt is wonderful and the extra quilting is exactly right. But I can understand how it wouldn't be to everyone's taste and think giving it to your neighbor is absolutely perfect. You're going to make her day, or more! The estate sale finds are fun - and a whole quilt top! (I sure hope I get all my quilts done before my things end up in an estate sale... I'd better get busy cause that's gonna take a while considering I keep starting new stuff...) I'll be watching to see what you do with all your goodies! And it's so wonderful that your high school class is still close. I have a big-number reunion this year and, thanks to facebook, have seen rumblings of a reunion, but haven't seen any of my classmates in about 10 years (and that was just one!), so I'm a little nervous and hesitant to join the party...and I wasn't one of the well liked kids anyways...thank goodness for growing up and new friends! We'll see...

    1. Thanks, Katie. Probably none of us will live long enough to sew up all our fabrics! Do make plans to attend your class reunion. The others are just as uneasy about what everyone will be like, but that won't last long. Go and have a good time! ---"Love"

  3. The colors used make for a very dramatic log cabin quilt. And I do love log cabin designs.

  4. I think the quilting in the B/W is perfect! Straight line quilting is a great way to quilt - not always easy to keep the lines straight! As you know I love garage and estate sales too! I went to an estate sale yesterday and bought a lovely quilt top 80x90 for $10. All hand stitched and in excellent condition. I'll post it soon. I'm going to sell it (hopefully). There was some nice embroidered linens and I might go back today to see if they are on half price now. It's wonderful that you keep in touch with your classmates after all these years. Staying in the same town helps a lot. There is a lot to say about sleeping in your own bed every night. Whenever we go on a trip we are anxious to get back to our own bed.

    1. Well, I must admit I marked the straight lines, and with the dual feed foot on my Janome, it was a breeze! About our class, only 4 or 5 still live in our home town, but the rest of us (except the one in MS) live within 60 miles, so that makes it easy. We truly are "family"! ---"Love"
