It's a Flimsy!
No! It's not my embroidery blocks! I wish it were. I haven't touched those since my last post!
I've had ten more days of busyness since my last post! Doesn't anyone know I'm an old lady? I may have to leave town a few days just to rest!
Son came and moved crepe myrtles to street for my bulk pickup week, and then I pulled weeds from the rose garden until I was worn out, but it looks better --- on one side anyway.
The next day was the Golden Agers luncheon at church for us old people. Then the next day after my follow-up appointment with my heart doctor, my quilting buddy took me with her to Hobby Lobby in a nearby town. We both needed quilting needles, and a rest.
Then on Thursday my oldest grandson was here for his 25th birthday celebration. His folks took him, his younger brother and me to dinner. After birthday cake at my house, they went home, and I started soaking red fabric my fabric buyer/friend had given me. It was bleeding badly so I left it to soak in the bathtub, actually for two days. I had tried everything I knew and that I could find on the internet, and nothing stopped it, so I put that piece of red in the trash! Not willing to chance ruining a pretty quilt! I even bought a big container of Orvus at Tractor Supply; nothing worked! By the way, in case you've never tried Orvus, the kind used to wash horses, you might want to. The label on the container says it is good to wash quilts, fine linens, and lace. I'm pretty sure it's cheaper at the farm store than at a quilt store. It was my first time to use it, but I'll be using it for a while before I use up that big container!
My quilting buddy suggested I needed to make a patriotic quilt for the church Youth Fund auction at the end of April. I had already planned to quilt a top I had bought at an estate sale, but it's green, not my usual patriotic for that sale. So....that's why I've been soaking red fabric, and also navy fabric.
Sunday after church I began cutting the patriotic Rail Fence quilt, using 9" blocks. I finished the flimsy late this afternoon. It is a hurried-up project because with all that's going on in my life everyday it seems, I knew it had to be something quick and easy. I still have to come up with a backing, but that will have to wait until next week! Hopefully I can get it quilted in time for the sale, and maybe the green thing too.
Here's the flimsy; it went together really easily and quite well, even if it is really simple! It is a throw, 63" x 45".
The three blocks at top and bottom are from cheater cloth scraps from my fabric buyer/friend. I hope to have enough to make the binding; we'll see. The red and navy are from him too. I'm not going to border it; probably should, but I'm not going to. It's not fancy, and the quilting will be very simple, but maybe someone will buy it to help the youth fund. I think the green one will do better if I can get it done. I'll show that one later.
Got a haircut yesterday, and that helped my feelings. Now if I can just get a pedicure tomorrow, my feet will feel better! At least the weather has been beautiful here this week. I've even had the patio door open so some fresh air could come in through the screen door.
I have a full schedule through next Monday, and then hopefully things will slow down around here. I sure hope so!
Surely have enjoyed seeing all the pretty little (and large) quilts that everyone has been making.

Good of you to hurry and put together a quilt for the Youth Fund auction. If I was there I would bid on it!
ReplyDeleteAnd you talk about my schedule making you tired...look at yours!!! It sounds like some fun things happened, so that's always good news. Sorry about the red, though. Very disappointing, but I think your end decision was the best one. And now I'm going to look for that Orvis (and since my "retirement job" is at TSC, that should be an easy thing to do!)... The patriotic quilt us beautiful and I sure hope it does well at the auction.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of yard work, bet it looks great now. I love the RW&B quilt! You did a nice job having the red and blue fabrics zig-zagging down the quilt.
ReplyDeleteGreat flimsy for the auction. Here's hoping it brings a tidy sum for the Youth Fund. A friend from our quilt ministry makes a queen size patriotic quilt every year for a DAR fundraiser, and also makes quilts for a local VA hospital.
