Two Donation Finishes

The past few days have been almost as busy as those described in my last post, but not quite as bad.

I still have not got all my messy places and things cleaned up, but I was determined to finish the green/purple donation quilt, and also the patriotic donation quilt.  I'm happy to say I have accomplished both of those!

Tonight I was looking through past posts and discovered that I had bought the green/purple table topper flimsy last June at an estate sale.  The top had several problems with seam pressing that had been stitched over, and some other construction problems too.  I started to make some corrections, but decided to just deal with the problems, and just get it quilted!  Here's the finish; it is 40" square, and I think it is quite pretty.

Those sashings are pieced from white and the green from the background, and are about 1" wide.  Whoever made the top allowed a few 'gathers' in the white at various places, creating a few problems.  Also some seams were not pressed the right direction, and then were stitched over.  I didn't think I had time to make all the corrections, so I just gave it a good press.  I didn't do a very good job of quilting it as a result of all the bumps, etc., but probably no one but another quilter will notice. Hopefully the striking colors will cover a lot of quilting sin!

I used my Janome Accufeed quilting foot for the minimum amount of quilting I did, all straight-line.
.
Whatever, it's a finish and ready to go to auction!

I got the patriotic Rail Fence quilt quilted also, again with the Accufeed foot and all straight line.  For the binding, I used the same cheater cloth fabric as the three blocks at top and bottom of the quilt.    Neither is it perfect, but maybe someone will like it enough to donate enough money to send  a kid to camp this summer.   I pieced the back from the fabrics leftover from the top.   Top is same layout as shown last post.

I had  told my estate sale friend not to bring anything else until I had a chance to get these two quilts finished.  He called today and said he was pretty sure he had found something I would want,.  He brought this embroidery piece to me today.  I will not be cutting it up, but will save it for another project that is developing in my brain.  Isn't it beautiful?   It is a table runner, with the same deign on both ends.  Of course, I said "Thank You!"

Praying Hands
Yesterday my computer tried to act up rather seriously, so tonight I decided to print some more of my blogs.  All you APQ Bloggin' Buddies know I've done that from time to time, and I just decided this was the time to do it.  My blog has become my memory book of my quilts, as well as a silly record of a lot of my life.  I know some of you printed yours in years gone by, and I'm wondering if you still do.

I also cleaned a bit in the sunroom today, and hope to get back to working on my embroidery quilt soon!

Yesterday it was 90 degrees here, and tonight we are likely to have severe storms, carrying over into tomorrow and into the evening, and if you can believe it, be down to freezing Sunday morning!  That's Texas, isn't it?

I really hope it isn't storming Saturday night.  The Firemen I used to work with have invited me again to their annual Awards Banquet at the Civic Center, and i really want to go.  Of course, my son will be taking me to help me up and down the stairs into the main hall.  (Don't know what I'd do without my son! --- Lots less, that for sure!)  If it's raining and storming, I'll have to miss it because I can't risk falling on slick pavement and steps.  I love getting to spend time with those guys, and I don't want to miss it!

Good grief!  It's past midnight again!  Guess I better get to bed!

Hope the storms miss ALL of us!

Hope you have a great weekend!

---"Love"

  1. Two wonderful finishes. I think that first quilt is so striking in appearance that the little glitches will go unnoticed--especially by non-quilters.
That is such a beautiful stitched piece your friend found for you. I look forward to seeing what you have planned for it.
Hope you get to go to the banquet. It is a blessing that you son is close enough to help you as much as he does. I don't know what people do when their families are far away from them. My Mom has all of her children here in this same valley and sometimes we get so scattered with our lives that it is hard to coordinate the help she needs, but we usually work it out.

  2. Well, you have beautifully disguised any sins that little purple and green quilt had, it looks great from here! The patriotic quilt looks wonderful too, I hope they both do well at the auction. Here's hoping your weather stays calm and dry for you today so you're able to get out and enjoy being with your friends.

  3. Both the donation quilts are beautiful. And I think you were right to just work with what you had on the first one. Anyone who knows better is going to know better! I hope you made it to the banquet - it sounds like a lot of fun to visit old friends. And your weather sounds a lot like ours - I woke up to find about an inch of snow on the ground with 52 predicted for the high today. Mother Nature sure does like to mess with us, doesn't she? (But I'm ready for spring and summer, along with I think the rest of the folks around here!)

  4. Both quilts are wonderful, I can't see any huge problems at all. Hope they bring in lots of cash at the auction. The embroidery piece your friend found is perfect for you, it will be fun to see what you design with it. Have fun!

  5. The purple/green quilt is lovely! It's good to rescue a quilt top from a garage sale and do something with it. I like rescuing things too. The patriotic rail fence is so striking! I'm sure it will make someone happy.
