Church Auction Results and More!

I'm ready for Summer!  This Spring has been busy, rainy, stormy, windy, full of special events that have required a lot of my time, out of State visitors, and funerals unfortunately.   Consequently, I've not sewed a stitch since my last post!  Again, I say, maybe soon I'll get back to sewing.

It seems it has rained some part of the last month's weekends, but for certain, it has rained every Tuesday night and Wednesday for the past month.  My garbage pickup day is Wednesday mornings, and I usually put the trash can out at the street on Tuesday night, but not once this past month!  I don't want the can blown into the street by the wind, so guess what.  My trash can is overflowing, and yet it is to storm again Tuesday night, and rain all the way to Saturday!  I guess I'll have to have some trash bags on the patio until Wednesday week; I can't get any more in the big trash can!  I'm wondering if I'll even be able to pull it to the street when the weather does cooperate!  We'll see, but not this week.

At least this Sunday is a beautiful day,  thankfully, and that's a good thing because the church Youth Auction was this afternoon.  I have no idea how much money was given to help kids go to summer camp, but lot of nice things were donated for the silent and live auction.  I have no idea who got my green/purple table topper shown in my last post; neither do I know how much it went for in the  silent auction.

My patriotic throw (rail fence pattern) was bought in the live auction for $165 by a fireman and his wife for their son who is in the Air Force.  I was surprised and pleased that they got it.

Sorry, but no pictures, and really no more quilty news this time.  IF you continue reading, you'll see why.

I did get to go to the Fireman's Annual Awards ceremony and see all those great guys (well, a lot of them) that I used to work with.  It was a wonderful evening, in spite of the rain.  My son dropped me off at the entrance where I waited while he parked the car, and he helped me up all those steps.  A few of the many retired firemen did not make it back because they had moved away, but it was great to see the ones who came back, and to meet lots of the new guys hired on since I retired.  They are all a special group of guys; that's for sure!

Last Sunday I determined that I was going to finish going through those four big boxes of my school days memories.  For a class reunion, I think back in 1991, I had prepared four large notebooks with pictures and articles from school newspapers and other memorabilia, but I found a bag of school newsletters that I had not gone through at that time, and a lot of them were from our Senior year.  So I began going through them to get copies of articles concerning our class members for my notebooks so I could then put all my school memories in two big boxes and get rid of the rest.

Just as I finished on Wednesday afternoon, and took some trash to the shredder, the phone rang.  It was an old friend/childhood neighbor who had moved to Idaho several years ago.  Their son still lives here, and they were here for a visit.  They were having lupper (lunch and supper combined) in Fort Worth and wanted to come to my home in about an hour.  Of course, I said come on!  They haven't been to Texas in six years, and were in my home then, so of course, I wanted to see them again.  He is four years older than I, and grew up on our neighborhood, and played with us younger kids because there were no kids close by that were his age.  His wife is a quilter, so that made me happy too to see them..

I didn't have time to clean house or myself, but hey, if I live like this, they can visit like this, right?
I told him I had just finished working on my school notebooks, and of course, he wanted to see them.  He had been the student photographer for school activities, and I knew he had indeed taken a lot of the pictures in my notebooks, many copied from our school annuals.  He loved looking through the notebooks, and she and I talked quilts and looked through my quilts.  She loved my embroidery blocks and said she is going to try some.  They stayed until 8:30 that night.  He mentioned that he wants to see my BFF who lives about 20 miles away, so I called her and made arrangements for her and her husband to come Thursday afternoon to  share some time with us.  A wonderful time was had by all of us.

The Idaho couple had supper plans with their son, and my BFF, her husband, and I had to go to a funeral visitation  Thursday at 6 PM for a dear classmate we had started first grade with --- a long time ago!  He was one of the sweetest guys in our class, and and worked for the railroad 44 years, so you can imagine that the funeral home was packed for that visitation time.  Then we went to his funeral on Friday, and there was standing room only, even in the foyer, and this is not a small funeral home!  He was much loved by many, and particularly our class.

As if all that was not enough to keep me busy last week, it was learned that another classmate ( our class clown ) would be coming to Texas from Mississippi for his annual visit sometime between now and the middle of May.  Our class always gets together when he comes.  We met last year at the classmate's home whose funeral was last Friday, so that place is out.  We met several times before that at another classmate's home, but he is too sick, so it rotates back to me!  All the other classmates are scattered to other towns, and they all love to come to my home, so guess what!  I'm having a "class reunion" of sorts sometime in the next two weeks, but I don't know when!  He is 81, and driving from Mississippi alone, and will not drive in the rain, thank goodness.  Since rain is predicted for every day this week, it will probably be the next week before he comes.  He likes to visit family first, so who knows when we can get our gang together.   But, it will happen!  I made a list, and figure we will have maybe 18 to show up.  I went to get paper plates, napkins, and  Styrofoam cups; what a shock that will be for everyone!  I've NEVER served anyone anything in my home ever on paper plates!  But the gals who are making the connections this time insisted I do that, not to my liking!  I also got flowers and decorations they will have to figure out.  When it's all over, I'll share more about how that went over.  I've been instructed not to worry about cleaning house, because, "My house is always clean", they say.   What a shock they will get if I follow instructions!  We'll see!

Then there's a surprise birthday party for another classmate on the 19th.  Sure would be nice if the Mississippi guy could arrange to be here for that; maybe that would do for the reunion with him since all the gang will be there and he could see everyone there.  That probably won't happen, but that would be much easier on me!

Now do you understand why I still have not sewn a stitch since my last post?  I keep telling my quilting friends (no classmates) that if I can just live through May, maybe I can quilt in June!  I may try to sneak in at least one block this week!  We'll see.

Sorry this has been so long, and of such little interest really to any of my readers, but thanks for hanging with me.  Someday before too long, I do hope to become a quilter again.   I let you know when that happens.

  1. Whew, I'm exhausted just thinking about all you've been up to. I agree with your friends, don't worry about cleaning the house or using fine china, nobody will care, they'll just be happy to spend some precious moments together with you!

  2. Oh Love, it's so wonderful that you have these long term friendships with old classmates and neighbourhood families despite time and distance keeping you apart. I can just imagine the chatter and laughter whrn you all get together so no one will be fussed about what kind of plate or cup they have. How marvellous that your quilt went to someone in defence forces. I'm sure they will treasure it.

  3. I think it is wonderful that you and your classmates still take the time to get together. Sounds like you have a very full plate for the next little while. I look forward to hearing about how your reunion works out.

  4. Wow, you are so busy! ! ! I love hearing what you are up to even if it isn't quilt related. Just keep posting! It is wonderful your quilt did so well at the auction, too!

  5. With all that, how could you have time to quilt?! It sure sounds like a lot of fun - well, most of it! We've had a lot of rain here, too, but I keep saying it's better than snow. We've had snow this late once or twice and I'm not a fan! I'm glad you at least know one quilt did well at the auction and I hope the other did as well or better. Enjoy the time with friends. Though quilting is fun, it's often solitary, and time with friends is a much better way to spend your time. But don't quit blogging - I enjoy hearing your stories and look forward to seeing the quilts you make when you do find the time.
