Quilt Show Results and Lots of Other Activity

Before I tell you about the quilt show today, I want to tell you that since my last post, I have been really busy!  For the last eleven days, I've had to be somewhere for something, every day except yesterday.  I've been to a funeral of another dear friend, a church luncheon for old folks like me, the wedding of the guy who brought me embroidery pieces, delivered show entry papers, then the show today, two doctor visits, helping a friend finally get her quilt top laid out and re-pinned (again), got a haircut and a pedicure, and of course, morning and evening Sunday church services.  Let me say, I've been busy, too much so for an old, old lady!

After my son took me to the doctor this past Wednesday, we had some time to spare before picking up my DIL at her job.  Son was driving her car because his was in the shop for some repairs.  In the time we had, we went to Penneys to do a little shopping.  We had walked through the perfume dept. and I stopped in the purse dept.  Son walked on some 30' to look at some Christmas decorations they already had out to sell.  All of a sudden, I felt like the buggy I was pushing, as well as my body, were turning over sideways!  I realized I was having another vertigo attack.  I yelled for my son; he caught me just before I went to the floor, and together we got to a bed with a beautiful blanket for sale.  I fell across the bed, and stayed there about 7-8 minutes before a clerk came by and asked if I were okay.  My son told her what was happening, and asked if she could get me a chair and a cup of water so I could take my emergency vertigo pill.  She did so very quickly and asked if she could call 911.  I said no, that if they could just get me to my son's car, he could get me home and in bed.  The clerk said she would get a wheelchair they had, and together they got me in son's car.  Then we had to go pick up his wife at work, then stop by to get his car from the repair shop, and his wife drove that home, and he brought me home.  On the way, he stopped at the fire station near my home and asked the firemen to come, no lights or sirens, to help him get me into my bedroom.  They gladly did so.  (Those guys are wonderful, and I love them all!)  My neighbor came over, got me in my pj's, and into bed.  After a few minutes I was ready to sack out, and told my son I would not get up, and for him to go home.  Fortunately, the next day, the day before the show, I didn't have to be anywhere, so I just stayed in bed or just fooled around a bit here in the house.

Son said, "Mom, you know you cannot drive yourself to the show tomorrow, (about 30 miles away), and I have to be at work at 8 AM an won't get off until 5 PM.  Do you have a friend who could take you if you feel like going?"  Yes, of course I have great friends, but all had other plans with out-of-town family for today, show day.  Finally, I asked the gal I've been helping her quilt, and she said she could take me, but couldn't stay until 4 PM when I could get my quilt.   My son called another friend who said she could get me home, but couldn't take me this morning.  Problem solved!

We got to the show this morning about 11 AM.  (I had wanted to be there when the doors opened, but hey, I got there!)  When I went in, the gals running the show said to me, "Glad you're here to see what happened to your quilt."  I asked what had happened, and they said it got a Blue Ribbon.  I remarked that it must have been the only quilt in the class, but they said no, there were several in the class, and the judge put the blue ribbon on mine. I said, "Must not be a very good judge, because I told you, my quilt did not have enough quilting."  But sure enough, I had a Blue Ribbon.  I still cannot believe it!  (But it was drawing lots of attention. )

Received Viewer's Choice Award also after quilt was down
My driver left the show about 11:30, and I then walked again around to take pictures; lots of pretty quilts there, but I'll admit mine was really catching everyone's eye.  It was fun to watch from a distance away.  Then at the close of the show, they announced that my quilt had also won as "Viewer's Choice", which really did not surprise me.  It is just so different from any other quilt there, but it certainly is not perfect, but hey, it's mine, and it suits me!

My friend who came to take me home got there about 2:30, and again, I looked at all the quilts with her.  As soon as the show closed and we could get my quilt, she brought me home, where I crashed for a little while.  Then I decided I wanted to get this posted so I wouldn't be tied down with it tomorrow.

After church tomorrow, for the next week, I have to be only at one doctor's appointment; nothing else scheduled so far.  I'll probably rest a lot.  I've put the firemen's quilt in the closet until probably after Christmas. Awards banquet is not until April so that's good.  I may work on a few things for Christmas, and as I've said many times lately, I AM going to do some housecleaning!

I've felt pretty good all day, and had my walker at the show to help me out.  I'm depending on it more and more, but that's okay.

Sorry this is so long; just wanted to tell you about my show winnings, and all the problems I had getting there and back home, where I'm glad to be.  I'm ready for bed now.    I'll post some other pictures soon; don't want to make this any longer!

Hope all of you have a great Sunday, and also a great next week!

  4. I think we all told you that quilt would do well at the show, but congratulations nonetheless! That is amazing and wonderful and goes to show you that modern and overquilted does not always take the ribbon! Viewers choice does not surprise me, but I'm so happy for you to have won that also - double congrats! I'm sorry you hear about the vertigo attack, but it seems you were in a good place to have it happen and the gal working sounds like a gem. I'm glad to hear you're using the walker - as much as we tease in our younger years about them, I know they serve and important purpose for those who are less steady on their feet and I do not want to read a blog post about how you let your pride talk you into leaving it home and you fell and ended up in the hospital for a week or something like that. (I still smile at the story a friend told me when she was told by her doctor to get a cane and, obviously seeing a negative reaction on the friends face, the doc told her even if she didn't need it, she could whack people who wouldn't get out of her way with it and, being feisty, I think that sold the deal!) I do hope you make some time to sew now and again, between all the cleaning you seem to be obsessed with (I'll clean later, I think, as I keep sewing!) and make sure to rest when you need it. Naps are such a wonderful thing, I can't figure out why I fought them so hard as a kid!

  5. Well deserved, these two honors for your gorgeous quilt! It has been a true labor of love that you can now enjoy, as you rest and recoup from the latest vertigo episode. I know you want to get at cleaning, but trust me, that dust will just come back again. There's not much reward to breaking your back cleaning, making a beautiful quilt that will become a family heirloom, now that's another story!

  6. Congratulations! Your quilt was most deserving of all the accolades and ribbon. It is stunning and the nicest version of the style that I have seen. I'm not surprised your head is spinning! Seriously though, glad your son was on hand to care for you and that the sales assistant was also very kind. Get some rest, there still lots to do.

  7. The quilt is amazingly beautiful and I'm so proud of you for doing it all yourself and for winning not only the blue ribbon but the viewer's choice as well!! I sure wish I could have been there to see the quilt hanging. It's wonderful too that you have your son and DIL to help you and many friends to fill in when needed. You have been so busy, you do need to slow it down a little for a while!

  9. Congratulations, Love! Of course your quilt deserved those ribbons. I think you are far too critical of your own work. I'm so glad you have family and friends around to help out. I'm too far to do much but send you good wishes, but I have plenty of those to spare.
