What A Difference A Day Makes! - More on Texas Snow

Wednesday was a cold, but beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky!

Thursday morning when I awoke, the grass had a light covering of snow.  The snow continued all day long, and until about 1 AM Friday morning.  Yes, I'm sure of that, because I was still up, and trying to take night time pictures of the snow from my patio.  The snow was glistening beautifully in the light from the security light in the back yard.  Those pictures didn't turn out well; I don't know enough about my camera!

I had taken pictures during all of Thursday, and was out there today (Friday) before 9 AM.  Here's some of the results.  I live a few miles south of Dallas/Fort Worth, where they received record-setting snow.  I think that's probably true of my town too!

I stuck a ruler in the snow in the front yard, and it shows 5.75 inches!

I don't remember ever in my life seeing that much snow where I live!

Neither do I remember it snowing literally all day and half the night!
Never have I seen such large snow flakes either!

I feel so sorry for the cold big white winged dove that I feed every day.
Their  feeder was covered with snow, just like the squirrels' !

I can't believe how much snow hung onto the roses! Notice how it stacked up on the bird bath too!

The house on the left is mine.  I hope my neighbor's live oak tree doesn't come down!

And this is "Snow Sledding - Texas Style" -  a neighbor and his little son came by while I was out.

I know this snow report cannot compare to what the northeast, and today, the southeast parts of this great country have been going through, but believe me, for Texas, this has been something very special!  Anyone from North Central Texas could confirm that for sure!  The sad thing is that people have no idea of how to drive in the mess, and consequently, it's not safe to be on the streets!

I don't want out there anyway!  I'm going to go quilt!  *smile!*  Hope you are quilting too!

  3. No, you must have stolen those pictures from MY house, that CAN'T be Texas! We didn't get hit as hard as the northeast, but we got probably close to a foot Tuesday into Wednesday and then it blew and blew and blew and blew (doesn't help we live across the street from a corn field), so it's hard to tell with the thigh-high drifts here and bare ground there...

Driving instructions: go SLOW! That's probably the biggest key, though seems people around here drive slower in rainstorms than snowstorms...

The pictures are beautiful, but I can't exactly say thanks for sharing because that's pretty much what I see out my window - minus the 4-wheeler pulling a boat...too cute!

  4. Enjoy the snow while it lasts, warmer weather is headed your way. We had the huge flakes a couple of days ago, but we are back to sunshine! I've only lived in NM for four years, but there is more snow on the mountain than I have seen in other years. That's good, we need all the water we can get!

    Enjoy your quilting!

  5. Wow, that's impressive! I have a sister in Toronto and they've hardly had any snow this year. I also saw on the news that they're having to truck in snow for the winter Olympics in Vancouver!!

    Enjoy your sewing. :-)

  6. When we get our first snow here, everyone gets upset/worried (myself included!!) about 4-6 inches. We run out and buy eggs, bread, and milk (my hubby says everyone must be making French Toast during snow storms!). Its amazing that now after our 2 feet they are predicting another snow on Monday but ONLY 4-6 inches. ONLY?! Crazy. I'm glad that you're enjoying your snow day there and having fun sewing inside. Stay warm and don't go out unless you have to :) Christine

  7. The West Coast of BC, sure has no snow... it's been spring here for the last couple of weeks. We've had one snow fall this winter, waaaaaaaay back in November, it lasted less than 24 hours, and it was no where near 5.75".

And yes, I've been quilting. Some more blocks going on the Day & Night quilt.

One of the mountains in Vancouver, Cypress Mountain didn't get much snow, the freezing level is much lower, and yes they were trucking in snow for it. There are using 4 mountains - Whistler & Blackcomb in Whistler, and Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver and Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver.

  8. OOps... I thought they were using 2 mountains in the Vancouver area... apparently they are using the one with no snow! - Cypress Mountain.

  9. I wonder how they truck in enough snow for the ski slopes, etc. In praise of Canada, I thought the Olympic opening ceremony was beautiful; very touching! I hated to hear about the unfortunate accident, and I'm sorry they had a glitch at the last, but they handled it all very gracefully! I looked at a Yahoo Vancouver map, and apparently they will be having events all over the city! (When I think about it, I guess they do that everywhere.) Anyway, I'll be watching every chance I get; I just love the Winter Olympics. ---"Love"

  10. Your pictures look like Indiana! And our feeders always pile up with snow so that we have to knock some off for the birds to get to the seed. Theri is on the north side of Dallas (with 9+ inches) and she was asking about her butterfly bushes. We have never had any break their branches in the winter, but ours always lose their leaves in the fall. Because you have so many plants with leaves in tact, the heaviest damage may not be seen for several weeks yet. So glad that you did not lose power and were able to keep quilting! Stay safe and warm... Mary

  12. My goodness, Love! Those poor birdies and squirrels. It does look very pretty though. Keep safe and warm. It is just the sort of view I'd like to be seeing from my window right now. Ann :-)

  13. That's a bunch of snow!! We've had stuff like that here, but not this year. It's been really "dry" so far. Not good for the vegetation.
    You should be inside quilting!!
    Happy Quilting!!

  14. Wasn't that a nice surprise?? We got 13 inches in Arlington. So crazy! I've never seen that much snow. The kids were crazy about it. Would have been out playing in it too but wasn't feeling too well. Better now though. Still have alot in our backyard too. Take care! Jenn
