Guess Who's Going to "Big D" Next Friday!

I'm so excited!  I received a call this morning from the friend with whom I've gone to the Dallas Quilt Show the past several years, and she invited me to go with the group again, with her husband driving seven of us old ladies right up to the front door of Market Hall!  I can hardly wait; that is always such a great show!  I'll be looking for Theri's name on a pretty something somewhere.  Check out all the vendors on this website!  http://www.quiltersguildofdallas.org/quiltcelebration2010/default.htm  Wish I were rich!

I've noticed several of you have mentioned you dread writing on your swap blocks after you've finished them.  May I suggest that after you cut your next blocks, but before you sew them together,  look back at your first blocks for the place you wrote on them, and then write on just those little pieces that go in the new blocks, BEFORE you sew them all together.  Just be sure not to write into the seam allowance.  That way, if the pen messes up, you've lost only those little pieces, not the whole block and your time!  Then gently rinse just the pieces you wrote on.  Then put the block together.  Seems to me that might avoid some anxiety and/or frustration.

My "Walmart Friend", who has moved to Missouri, was still visiting in Texas today and stopped by for a short visit.  She made this for me.
It folds over and closes with Velcro, and has a zipper pocket on the other side for needles, thimbles, etc.  A six-inch ruler fits perfectly.  It holds all the little tools I take to quilt at the church.  Everytime she visits, she brings a neat little gift, sometimes crocheted or knitted; she a very talented lady!  My quilting buddies will be jealous!

The church quilters got our Stack and Whack blocks stitched into rows yesterday.  Here's just a couple of the blocks;  I think they are beautiful!    Sorry I don't have a picture of the fabric before it was cut.

Wish I could win the raffle!
It's going to be a gorgeous quilt!

I stitched together the backing for my own Stack and Whack today.  After watching that Sharon Schamber video on sandwiching quilts that Ruth recommended, [  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhwNylePFAA  , both parts, ], I went to Home Depot and bought my boards!  One set will handle up to 96", and I had two other boards cut at 60" and 36", so I could use them on smaller quilts.  Now I just have to get busy; no more excuses!   I hope I can make that method work for me;  looks much easier to me than what I've been doing!

Now for the joke of the day (giggling and blushing) --- I worked ALL day Wednesday, literally until after dark, in the back yard, and when I came in almost too exhausted to eat or bathe, I missed my portable house phone.  I had it in my sweat jacket pocket, but it was no where to be found!  I had the outside lights on, and was walking around the yard with a flashlight, to no avail.  I came in and called a friend and asked that she call my phone and let it ring until it went to message.  Well, I followed the ringing, and found the phone in the middle of a big bag of leaves, ready for the trash man the next morning!  I guess it fell out of my pocket when I bent over to put leaves in the bag.  I'm just grateful that I found it!  --- This crazy old lady needs a keeper ---- or at least a yard man!  *wink*

Hope everyone has a great week-end, and gets some quilting done.  I'm not sure yet whether I will or not, but I'll try, really I will.

---"Love"

  1. I'm a little jealous you get to go to the quilt show, but it's a bit of a drive for me... I LOVE the little goodie case - you're right, I'm jealous! The stack and whack blocks are goergous. As for your phone...aren't you glad you called it that night instead of just waiting till morning? I've never lost my phone in a bag of leaves, but it does usually fall out of my pocket when I'm working outdoors, so you're not alone there!

  2. Oh I'm sooooo jealous!! Make sure to take lots of pics.

I am constantly asking my husband to call my cell phone. The worst part is I'm horrible at locating sounds (sort of a weird problem), but he usually has to call the phone several times before I can find it. hahah!

I love your little pouch. I think I need to start hanging around Walmart and looking for my own Walmart friend.

Thanks for the pen advice. The pen worked OK for me (thanks again for the freezer paper advice), but I don't like the tip of the pen I have. It really isn't smooth and I think I'd do better with something with more of a felt tip. I'll have to hunt around.

Let us know how the basting goes. That part is my least favorite!! :) Christine

  3. Oh fun! Enjoy the qult show Love!
The stack and whack colours are striking. I hope we'll see a picture of the finished quilt.
So glad you found your phone before the trash man came! I've avoided losing the phone in the yard by leaving it inside and getting my kids to run to answer. I think this system will work for another few years, then I'll be in trouble. Keeping track of keys, on the other hand, is already an issue...

  4. Have a great time in Dallas. My husband lost his wedding ring and we found it in a bag a wood chips!

  5. Enjoy the quilt show. You will have so much fun!
My friend's husband has taken us to the door of the Chicago show a few times. When our feet get tired we call him and he comes back to the door to get us. Great service.
You have to let us know about the basting boards, I just saw that tip and it looks like it beats crawling around on the floor.
I am so glad you looked for your phone right away.

  6. The quilt show will be such fun Love, especially since you are being chauffeuered. Is there enough room for all the ladies - and their shopping - on the trip home? I sure hope so. The stack and whack blocks are so striking and the raffle winner will be lucky indeed. Thank goodness you found the phone. I'll be interested to read what you think of the basting method. Thanks again for the information about writing on our blocks. Cheers, Ann :-)

  7. Oh man, sounds like you will beat me to the show? I suppose you will be on your way home by the time I get off work... That's just too bad but I probably won't be able to get there before they close on Friday. I will probably put in some volunteer hours as well as time perusing the show (and shopping!) over the weekend, but I did not put any quilts in this one. I didn't think I was going to get my owl done in time, back when the applications were due. But I should be in next year! Hope you have a wonderful time and can't wait to see what you find! :) Theri

  8. Well darn, I had such high hopes that you and Theri could meet at the show. Your friend must have a good sized van to take seven of you to the city! Sounds like a wonderful plan and I hope you have fantastic weather. Your friend surprised you with a wonderful gift for carrying your quilt supplies. Ask her if she'd like to visit Indiana? (It's not too far from Missouri...) As for the phone thing--my husband and I lose things all the time; it's just a progression of "what did I come to the pantry for?" Not to worry as long as you are clever enough to call a friend and have her ring your phone! My fingers and toes are crossed for you to win the stack and whack quilt! Mary

  10. I can't count the time's I have had to have my husband call my phone to find it;)
Love the tool holder. Let us know how the basting plan works. It would be great to be able to get my big tops basted without having to move the furniture outside the apartment!
    Happy Quilting!!
