Free Motion??? and Crochet

If you promise not to laugh, I'll show you my attempt and first finish of free motion quilting.   It is 26"x18".
Just to prove how gutsy I'm feeling, I'll even show you the back!  Aren't those squiggly, shaky curves and sharp points lovely?  *tee hee*

Okay, stop laughing now!  You promised!  I can hear you all the way to Texas!  *giggle* There's certainly no danger it will be mistaken for Ruth's beautiful quilting, is there?  I really, really do want to learn to do this, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it.  Of course, I never could draw anything, ever in my life, so I don't know why I think I could do it with thread! *frown*  But I'm going to keep practicing as much as I can; just know that it may never appear in this blog again!   Showing this took more courage than I normally have!

Today I got the star quilt all sandwiched and pinned, ready for quilting, but tonight I have no ide how to do it!  Any suggestions?  I'm thinking about laying it aside and piecing another patriotic quilt, the last for this year!  Maybe tomorrow I'll feel better about it, hopefully.  I'll probably ruin it, or maybe I'll be "ripping" until Christmas???

Here's my purchases at the youth auction Sunday night:

The pink afghan was made by my pastor's wife, and I stole it for $45!  It will be perfect with my pink rose quilt!  The pink/white doily was made by a dear little lady whom I love, and since no one else had bid on it, I got it for the starting bid of $5.  I don't know who made the baby caps, but I got both for $3!  I'll give them to my son's step-daughter when her little girl comes in a few months.  From those prices, you can see that the sale did not go well!  My Big IF really lucked out!

Today I watched several really good TV programs about the Founders of our Nation.  Very interesting!  Also got the AC serviced, and just so you know, the cost of freon has really jumped around here!  I needed about two pounds, so I'm nice and cool tonight!

Hope everyone remembers and celebrates all that July 4 is about!  Also stay safe!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!

  1. I'm sure no one will be laughing because I think you did really well on your FMQ! It takes a little while to get the hang of it for sure, but yours looks great! I do find it hard to decide what quilting design to use. BTW, mine isn't perfect - I just keep going and when the whole thing is finished, it's the overall effect that people see, not the mistakes (and I make plenty of them and don't have the patience to rip all of them out - I don't necessarily take close up pictures of the mistakes either - don't tell anyone). Very nice purchases too. I love crocheted doilies.

  2. It takes a lot of practice to perfect stipple quilting and then even when you have gotten better you still sometimes make a a less than perfect curve. It was a long learning curve for me and some quilting projects go better than others. Patience. Sometimes, I wash and dry the quilt and that "hides" some of the mistakes.

I think you did great and I certainly was not laughing.

    Happy Quilting,
    Charlotte

  3. Who's laughing? I can't stipple/meander worth beans, and yours looks great to me. I have to mark everything and try to stay on the lines :)

  4. I think your quilting looks great. Particularly if that's your first go at it. I can't draw either, so I hear you on the wondering if you'll ever be any good, but practice makes perfect and if you look really hard at a quilt that wasn't quilted with a computer, you'll see so many imperfections it will make you feel better about yours. Like Ruth said, it's the overall effect that everyone else will see, and that's okay with me! Your purchases are wonderful, but I'm sad to know what a steal you got because I know it means that much less for the youth auction.

  5. Take a closer look at those photos of quilts in magazines and you see plenty of imperfections in the quilting. It's not about being perfect. So long as you enjoy the process. That's a beautiful afghan and pretty doiley. ann :-)

  6. Not laughing here. I think you did a good job. I am kinda of like you, I get ready to quilt, then I don't want to ruin it with my FMQ. LOL
Great purchases at the auction. Sorry the bidding was slow, but you got some beauties.

  7. Happy 4th to you, Love! Your quilting is just fine-no one will look at it so closely as to see any mistakes or you can tell them that you meant to do it that way! (Besides, if they can't do it themselves, they have no business criticizing at all!) Love the pink afghan!
