I'm Seeing Stars!

I've been sewing again every day this week!  First I made 80 Flying Geese; then I made 20 stars!  Then I added stripes to those stars, and today I got it together!  Haven't measured yet, but it's roughly 48"x60".  The bias strip hanging on the side will be the binding.
Ruth, I think you blogged about the quilt below from the Arlington show 2011 maybe.  We both really liked it, and I decided to give it a try from looking at the picture.  However, I don't want mine to be that large, so I think I'm stopping with the navy border.  Mine is made from scraps mostly, and I don't have 3" left of the navy!  Neither do I want to make and match that many strips for the borders!  I'll probably try to start quilting mine next week.  (Just now realized my stars are going in a different direction!  *giggle*)
I went to Walmart Friday for a jug of orange juice, and came home with this: (Oh please, I needed more red 'scraps'! -- tee hee!)  The stripe will be my binding, on the bias, of course!

Thursday nine of the church quilters met for our last meeting/luncheon until Fall.  It was 100+ degrees, and the building was hot, hot, hot!  I couldn't stand it, so I said, "My house is a wreck; I've been sewing for 2-3 weeks, but...let's pack it up and go to my house!", which is maybe 10-12 blocks from the church.  I hurriedly cleared the fabric, etc., off the tables and bar in the sunroom; the extra big table was already in use, so I dragged out a couple of plastic tablecloths, glasses, silver, and folding chairs.  I got one gal to stop by Chicken Express for a gallon of tea, and someone brought paper plates from the church, and we just ate, chilled out, and had a wonderful time until almost 3 PM!

Then on Friday morning, I reluctantly took my three donation quilts to the church for the auction Sunday night after church.  Everyone who has seen "The Big IF" keeps saying I should not put it in the auction, but rather I should keep it. Well, when I started it, I said it was for the auction.  Thursday, one of the ladies looked around my house, and said very sternly that I need to hang "that cross quilt" over the cedar chest in the sunroom, and take "The Wave Salute" to the sale instead.  Everyone but me agreed!  (I like my Wave Salute too --- my first drunkard's path curved piecing project!)  I was almost tearful when I handed "The Big IF" over to the Youth Director.  I told him if the sale doesn't go well, I'll buy it back and bring it home.  Of course, I don't know what "well" is!  *frown*   There certainly is a cash limit on what I can donate to the youth, but I'll do the best I can if it becomes necessary.  I'll start watching for fabrics to make another one for me I guess.  The other two little quilts didn't bother me at all!  It will all be over by this time Sunday night!  Seems like I remember that God loves a cheerful giver; I guess I better plaster a smile on my face, huh?  Maybe no one else will even want my quilt!  (I hope!)

One bright thought:  my two big patriotic hand-written quilts will be in the quilt show at Midlothian, along with three of Ruth's, July 20-21.  I can hardly wait to see what she's entering.   I'm pretty sure we won't be in the same class, since she quilted hers, and I had someone else quilt mine.  I'm looking forward to getting to show mine, but I'm certainly not expecting to win a ribbon.  I just want people to get to see and read them.

In the meantime, I need to hit the sack!  Morning will come early tomorrow!  Who knows?  I may want to start one more patriotic quilt Sunday afternoon, while I still have all those fabrics out!

Stay cool (or warm maybe in some parts of the world), keep quilting, and have fun all the while!

  1. I'm not surprised you don't want to give it away, it's beautiful. I hope it goes to a good home. Karen x

  2. It's not easy when we get attached to a quilt, but I guess we have to keep reminding ourselves of the amount of quilts we already have!

I hope the weather cools down a bit for you soon, we've had the fire going non-stop for a couple of weeks now and Jack Frost has been paying us many visits! xoxo

  3. Another wonderful patriotic quilt! Love it! I remember seeing it at the quilt show and thought I would make it some day, but other projects continue to be pressing. You got some good fabric too. Love the stripe for the binding. I'm glad you didn't donate the Wave Salute, but can understand why you didn't want to donate the Big IF quilt. Oh, the dilemmas we face!! I took a day off from quilting and started some flag placemats. I have a secret project, which is placemats for all family members to use at our anniversary get-together. Each placemat will reflect something that the person likes and will have their name appliquéd on it. For example, GS plays the piano, so I used some piano fabric and red fabric w/black notes. I'm having fun with these, but need to get going to finish by Aug 18.

  4. You deserve that tired! The stars quilt is beautiful and I like yours without the borders better - less busy for my eye. It may be a good thing my Wal-Mart stopped carrying fabric considering how often I stop in there for just a thing or two... I hope the youth auction goes well and your quilts bring in big donations. Good luck at the quilt show - I wouldn't be suprized if you end up with a viewer's choice award!

  5. Your new quilt is gorgeous! I love red, white and blue quilts. It is just perfect stopping with the blue border. I hope the auction goes well and brings in lots of money for the youth group. I predict your Big IF quilt will be a popular one. It should be easy to make yourself another one, you have had practice with the first one. It would have been really hard for me to give it up, but you made it with a purpose. Your quilts for the show are so beautiful and so creative, I bet you do win a ribbon! Enjoy!

  7. Your stars quilt is a beauty. I like yours better than the original, the striped border is a bit busy.
I hate to tell you, but there is no way that your Big IF will not be bid on like crazy.
rest, put your feet up for a few minutes. :)
    Happy 4th of July
