Quilt Show Pictures and Block Heads Week 32

First off , I'll get the Moda Block Heads Week 32 out of the way.  It was easy!  When making flying geese, I always use my Eleanor Burns Flying Geese Ruler.  Yes, I know, I'm probably the only one, but it is so easy to use, and really, there's very little waste.  ......So I'm caught up until in the morning!

I also got my scrap flimsy all sewn together, but it is so similar to what I showed last time, and this post is so picture heavy, I'll wait until another time to show it again.  I still think I like it.

My son called late last Friday night and told me he saw on Facebook that a lot of pretty quilts were displayed at FBC, Maypearl, Texas, and would still be displayed Saturday morning.  I had seen earlier in the month that Corsicana had an ongoing show everyday until Oct. 27.  Hmmm.....two quilt shows I'd like to see!  Wouldn't you know all my quilting buddies were either on vacation, moving, or otherwise occupied, and my son was scheduled for work on Saturday.  I rarely drive myself  alone into the DFW metroplex, but hey, I could get to both these places on country Farm to Market Roads. My car had been serviced a couple of weeks ago, and my gas tank was full.  I decided to go alone --- all by myself, something I've not done in a long time, anywhere except church and the grocery store here in town.  I left home at 8:45 AM, and got back into town at 5 PM, having had a wonderful time and seeing lots of pretty quilts!  Also I saw lots of beautiful countryside and farmland, free from traffic and crowded neighborhoods.

The Maypearl show was not a judged show; the church quilters there were just displaying their quilts for anyone to see.  I'm so glad I went!  Here's a few pictures from there.  Sorry, I don't have names of the makers, but they probably wouldn't care anyway because their names were not prominent on their quilts; one had to look hard for a maker's name.

Cut Work Tablecloth quilted over red fabric; I loved this one!

Embroidery, some new, most salvaged from damaged pieces; I loved this one too!

Look at all those borders!
A look back as I was leaving
All the ladies in Maypearl were super nice and friendly!  I stayed so long I wondered whether I should go on to Corsicana, about an hour's drive away  but I really wanted to see that show too, so away I went!  I got there at 12:25 PM with no trouble at all, and the show was scheduled to close at 2 PM.  It was a judged show, and had lots of amazing quilts too.  The quilts were again displayed different to any show I'd seen before, but it was very interesting.  My feeble legs did just fine climbing the stairs to the second floor.  The one lady who was 'guarding the store' was very cordial and friendly; I really enjoyed talking with her.  Remember, the show had been running since Oct. 2, and is to continue to October 27, so probably most people who wanted to see the show already had been there.  There were a few others that came in, but mostly I was by myself.  I'd never been to a show like that before.  I was beginning to wonder if my deodorant was failing me so bad no one wanted to be near me!  *giggle*

Here are some of my favorites from Corsicana.

I can't even imagine that many different borders!

This Bargello provided its own illumination!

This huge quilt is beyond my imagination!

If I could have brought just one quilt home with me, this next one would be that one!  Unfortunately, it was draped over a chair rather than hanging, but it was under a bright light, unlike some of the others.  I just had to take several pics of it to get the various pretty embroidery, crochet, and lace.  It was my absolute favorite!  Maybe someday I will make a similar one with all that pretty handwork made by my mother and aunt, but stored away in drawers, unused and unseen!  What a waste!
Hope this blog will allow all these pictures!  They speak for themselves, to me anyway!

What a wonderful day I had last Saturday, even if I was alone all day!  I'm so sorry my buddies couldn't go, but I'm really glad I did!

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I take my quilt and two of my DIL's to FBC, Crowley, for their show Saturday.  I can hardly wait to see how one of hers does.  She has been quilting just one year this month, and I'm so proud of her!  I think the show will be another good learning experience for her.  I'll have one in the show that I made in 2006; I had someone else machine quilt it.  Will show them next post.

Then on Friday I'm taking a new member of our church quilting group with me to Granbury for a quilt show there in an historical church like I've seen only in pictures!  Guild members' quilts will be draped over the pews.  I can hardly wait!  Again, my usual two traveling buddies are still unavailable; they are missing lots of pretty quilts, (though one of them is in Arkansas and seeing quilt shows there and of course fabric shops!).  If allowed, I'll take lots of pictures there too, and share next time.

Then on Saturday is the Crowley Show, and then church Sunday.  Monday will be my first day of rest in almost a week, and I'm sure I'll be looking forward to that!

Hey, I know I'm way too old for all this, and I'm really pretty crippled up, but I'm NOT giving up, especially if there's a quilt show somewhere!  Maybe next year I'll stay home long enough to get something made for a show somewhere!

Hope all of you are having as much fun as I am!

  2. Your Moda block is perfect! I just printed out #33 and picked out fabric to make 2 of them. Tomorrow I'm going to a friend's house to sew all day! I'm taking the Moda blocks & patriotic fabrics for a veterans quilt. The photos you posted are lovely! I too really love that last quilt with all the vintage embroidery and lace!! Lots of other awesome quilts too. I have been to the Corsicana quilt show a couple times and it is always very nice. Have fun at your future quilt shows!

  3. I think your Eleanor Burns ruler is a nifty tool for making geese, especially ones this size! You are such a sweetie to share your trips to all the quilts shows. We don't have as many here. I'd love to visit the USA and see the shows first hand. If you ever hear an Aussie accent is some out of the way town quilt show, you never know, it might just be me!
