When Life Gives You Scraps, Make a Quilt!

I know that title is not an original, and even though I gripe and complain a lot, life really has not given me many scraps.  Most of my life has been very pleasant, and the Lord has supplied me with all I need, and most of what I thought I wanted, and for that I'm grateful.

Over the years I've enjoyed online shopping occasionally from Nancy's Notions website, and a few days ago I decided to check her blog.  What I read there made me very sad.  You can read it here .  I also checked a few videos from there, and decided to try my hand at the one in my title to this post.  You can see it here .  I really like the ideas presented there, and decided to drag out a couple of bins of scraps, one from many years ago when I first started quilting, the other from just a few years ago.  I started digging in and wondered if I could actually come up with enough strips to make a strip quilt or two.  This is just part of what was left after making my necessary blocks.  Everything in my blocks came from scraps, except the one yard of light blue material to the left that I used in my hour glass blocks, and it had been in my stash forever,  No expense here for new fabrics!  What a jumbled mess I ended up with!   But....I did have fun!  I made one amazing discovery:  I didn't have any yellow scraps in either of those bins!  Oh, I do remember TWO 1" strips, but I didn't use either of them in these blocks.  Come to think of it, I haven't used much yellow in recent times either.

I stitched 40 strip blocks and 40 hour glass blocks, and put them up on my design wall.  I think I'm going to like it, IF I can get accustomed to the irregularity of the strip width, some angles, and color variety.  I am one that likes things more orderly usually (at least in my quilts!).

I had unexpected company this afternoon and didn't get the blocks sewn together, but below is the basic layout of my blocks.  This evening I discovered a mistake in one row of my layout, so i'm glad I didn't get them all sewn together.

Sorry; I failed to crop the picture!
Through the years, I've followed Nancy's blog and website, and have ordered from her several times. I've been so inspired by things I've seen and learned a lot from what she presented there.  Her sad news really got to me.  So...even though Lynn Harris presented this quilt, I've decided to name mine "Nancy's Scrap Quilt"; it will remind me of her every time I see it or a picture of it.

Tomorrow is church quilting day, and I had hoped to take the flimsy to show the others, but that won't happen.  Maybe I can get it together this weekend.

Friday is Homecoming for my home town school.  Believe it or not, I was a high school cheerleader there about 60+ years ago.  I received a call this morning from someone, asking if I would like to ride on the float honoring my class in the Homecoming Parade on Friday afternoon.  Two of the other cheerleaders had agreed to participate, and some other class members also.  I said I would love to do that, but it would be impossible for me to get onto the float, and then stay there.  My legs just will not work well enough for me to walk without my cane, even in my house, and with my ongoing vertigo problem, I'd probably fall off the float if they could get me on it!  So I had to say I couldn't do it.  That would be so much fun, and I really hated to say no to the invitation.  If possible, maybe I can go to watch the parade, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun.  Oh well, getting old is just so much fun anyway, isn't it?

I'd probably better just stay home and sew!  After all, that's fun too!

Anyone else having fun yet?

  1. I love your scrap quilt!! I really need to work on using up more scraps. We are planning a long road trip to visit the 2 sons who don't live near us and I think I'll take lots of scraps to make blocks in my spare time on the trips. I want to make some log cabin blocks for one thing. Believe it or not, I also was a cheerleader in high school!!! Another thing we have in common! Also, the ladies in my quilt guild were invited to be in the Veteran's Day Parade either in Portland or in Albany, OR. The Albany parade is the largest Veteran's Day parade west of the Mississippi River and lasts 3 hours. The reason is because we make quilts for veterans in hospice. Kind of like Quilt of Valor, but not. I don't think I'll do it though. Glad you got back to sewing.

  2. Well, I was not a cheerleader in high school (more into student government and music back then), but I will comment anyway. :) I really like this scrap quilt. The hourglass blocks are a favorite setting block, though I haven't used it myself (isn't that silly). But I absolutely love the effect they create as setting squares--always have.
Do you want yellow scraps? I could probably send you some. They might lean more toward mustard/gold, but if you want some, say the word.
Sorry you are still dealing with the vertigo. Meniere's disease can be unrelenting.

  3. Well Love, I just love your new scrap quilt, and I love that you were inspired by Nancy. I have enjoyed watching her for so many years, and was saddened to read of her latest health issues. She will certainly be missed.
Too bad you won’t be able to participate in the parade, but much better for you to stay on solid ground. I, too am glad you got back to sewing.

  4. Seems like Nancy has been a public television staple forever. I have enjoyed watching many of her programs. A sad day.

  5. That is very sad news for Nancy and her family. Your quilt is a beautiful tribute to all she has shared with fellow quilters over these many years. I bet you were a fantastic cheerleader in your day.

  6. Your quilt is beautiful and full of fond memories of Nancy. Hope she has lots of love and support to get her through what she faces. One thing I learned about parades long ago, being in one is fun, but you don't get to enjoy the parade! You miss out on all that is going on around you. Spending time sewing sounds good to me.
