You knew I was going to do it! So what do you think?
These are my first two string blocks, not yet stitched together. I used muslin for the foundation. The block on the left may look different the next time you see it. My eyes require balance so much that, at this point anyway, I think I'm going to have to make all the strips the same width. Yet when I look at strip quilts on other blogs, the width/color mingling is beautiful. Maybe I just don't have enough blocks made yet to deal with it. I do know I'm going to like the white/pink sashing appearance as it progresses. Notice the pink/blue/pink/blue arrangement; needs more color variety! I have some soft greens and yellows and other fabrics pulled from my stash, but didn't have time to cut them today. My initial plan was for this quilt to be in mostly pastels. While that dark strip in the right block has more pink showing 'in person', it comes across way too dark in the pictures to suit me. Again, if I get more dark strips blended in, maybe it will be okay. Just two blocks --- and what a learning experience! I may have to work on re-training my eyes to accept variations more, and forget the balanced blocks! After all, this is supposed to be a string quilt, not a bunch of frames! Yet that is what I'm fighting with in my mind's eye! I will say this --- just by turning each block, one can get four different looks! I think this will be fun when I get time to make more blocks, and then just play with them.
So time is going to be a factor for a few days too! Oh well, at least I satisfied my need to try the string quilt idea! Maybe now I can go back and finish one of those other projects.
While digging for strips and scraps, I found some old well-worn jeans I had saved to make a rag quilt for my oldest grandson. I had already cut out the seams and zippers, etc. So I cut that fabric into thirty-three 6-inch squares. There are more jeans here somewhere, but only God knows where at this moment. I should have cleaned out the sewing closet; I'm sure I would have found them! (So does that mean I started two quilts today? Oh dear!) Oh well, there's no rush on either one. *wink*
Hope everyone has a good week-end, and gets some quilting done! We are expecting extreme heat again for the next several days!

Great start Love! Your blocks will have your wellcrafted stamp on them. I'm looking forward to seeing how they progress. Stay cool - plenty of iced tea and airconditioning! Cheers, Ann :-)
ReplyDeleteI can picture your string quilt the way you have it going, and I think it's going to look great. I try not to get too caught up in individual block presentation as I am putting a whole quilt together.
ReplyDeleteHappy Quilting!!
I know what you mean. I like things to be neat and orderly, and have been trying to embrace the asymmetrical as I love the look of it. It's just hard to break old habits sometimes!
ReplyDeleteStick with the varied widths for the string quilt. It's out of your comfort zone, but if you truly love the ones you see on other blogs, you'll be doubly proud of yourself for working through it. (I speak from experience here...do you know how hard it was for me to make those wonky log cabins from different size strips? I nearly drove myself insane with my unconscious trying to make things symmetrical, but I love the result and am proud of myself for having done it.)
ReplyDeleteWith that said, I like them. I like the white in the middle - it gives my eye something to rest on, something that's not always available in a string quilt. It's going to be beautiful, no doubt about it.
As for jeans...if you can't find yours, my hubby has a few pairs I'll volunteer!
Sometimes following your impulse is good! Those blocks are gorgeous! Did you go to Bonnie's site for hints? Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent start. Try to resist the temptation to make all the strips the same width! I saved old jeans for years, as well. I will have to dig them out and think of a project for them.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you found the inspiration you needed.
Sandy
Your string blocks are beautiful. I think that once you have a few more put together you'll find that your center white and pink strips will provide all the symmetry you need, and the splashes of other colours coming together won't care as much about matching. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be wonderful, as all your work is.
ReplyDeleteI'm like you, I have trouble thinking "out of the box". I do, however, think that the string quilt will be great. I love making rag quilts, that's how I started quilting. Stay cool. I'm really trying, it's miserably hot and humid here in Illinois. Connie204
ReplyDeleteLove the blocks. I, too, have a symmetrical brain. I cannot do "random". It just won't work. Now, if you continue the white center strip bordered by the two narrow pink ones for each block, I think that just might satisfy the symmetrical side of your brain as it will create a symmetrical pattern. That is gonna be one beautiful quilt!

I think the string blocks are gorgeous! Love the pinks and blues. Keep going and playing with them, you will love it!
ReplyDeleteI have a rag quilt made of denim, I just bought some denim fabric, didn't do the jeans thing. It is great but heavy! I will post a photo on my blog someday.
I like your string blocks. I have a thing about symmetry too, maybe when you have more blocks and more colors you will have a better idea of how everythng will lay out.
ReplyDeleteAhh us type A personalities!! I know just what you mean! I'm sure you'll play with them and find the right balance of happily asymmetrically symmetrical. heheh. I can't wait to see the jean quilt :)
ReplyDeleteNo worries, Love. By the time you make about thirty blocks you will be getting tired enough of them that it won't matter what the sizes are! Then you too will have a variegated quilt! :) Theri
