Three More Underground Railroad Blocks

Three more blocks completed; two to go plus the story block.  Then I'll have to go shopping for sashing, borders, and backing!  Not sure just when that will happen.
Flying Geese
I love making Flying Geese with Eleanor Burns' special geese ruler.  As I have finished each block, I have laid them out in the order of the story, and as I did so, rather than always going with the color plan in the book, I changed some colors around.  (I know you cannot believe that Love would do that! *wink*  I wouldn't recommend it; it causes shortages in fabrics you need for other blocks!)  If you have seen the book, you may remember that the middle geese were the lighter values.  Well, I wanted my pretty blue geese to lead the flocks off into the wild blue yonder, so I went from lightest to darkest values when I lined up the geese.  That idea sort of destroyed the look of "ducks in a row", but it almost created a new star! Maybe I should have unsewed and changed it, but to be truthful, I kinda like it!  So I'm leaving it!

Birds in the Air
Boat
Looks like I better check that sail!  I think it really is straight, but hopefully just not laid out straight for the picture.  This was the easiest block!

I still have to make the Drunkard's Path and North Star blocks.  When I began cutting the Drunkard's Path pieces, I decided I didn't have enough of the fabric I wanted to use, and couldn't decide on another, so I skipped it and made the boat.  Because I've used so much of the blues in other blocks, I may not have enough of the more solid one for the star.  So I may have to go shopping for something a little different this week before I can finish the blocks.  (What a shame, right?)  I have to admit I don't think I made good fabric choices and colors when I first began.  They work well within each color, but I'm not really fond of how the reds, browns, greens, and blues mix together!  It is a real stretch for me!  (Again, not my usual pinks and greens!)

I still have lots of scraps from the fat quarters, but most are fairly small.  I'm considering using them up in a pieced border maybe around the corners, or the middle of the top and bottom, whatever.  Or maybe I should save them for some mini quilts!  Decisions!  Decisions!  I need to make an 8" for my tiny quilt rack soon.

Maybe, just maybe, I can get these blocks finished this week, lay them out, and get a good look at them all together!

  1. More great looking blocks. I don't think it would be a "Love" quilt without a few changes. I am looking forward to seeing all of the blocks together.

  2. I love the colors you used for your geese. Finding sashing and borders for really scrappy quilts or samplers takes a bit more work, but the results will be worth it.

  3. These look great! It's your quilt, you should put the blocks together the way you want! It will be great when it all goes together. When I made my Underground Railroad quilt I ordered all of my fabric online. You know how that goes, it is always better to see the fabric in person but it all worked out just fine. Have fun with yours.
