Well, SURPRISE! I didn't fall off the wagon at the one stop shop hop last Saturday. No one will believe this, but I bought ONLY a package of 90/14 needles, and that was at a quilt shop after we left the convention center. I had my mind made up before I went that I really do not need more fabric, and I was able to stick with it.
However, I must admit I was very close to wrecking the whole wagon! When I rounded the first corner to start up the second aisle, a Sweet Sixteen jumped out right in front of me! I stomped down on the wagon brakes, of course, but had to spend quite some time there to be sure I hadn't slid into anything. *giggle* Now to get back to reality, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to "play" with that fascinating machine for several minutes, but I was getting so caught up in it, I had to excuse myself from that area for a while. (Some of you know how I get carried away at show demonstrations!) After the crowd dispersed a bit, I went back and played some more. They made a good deal on it, and I really wanted it, but then I had a talk with myself, came to my senses and realized that even if I paid high dollar to have my big quilts custom quilted, I would most likely not spend that much in my lifetime. I had to admit to myself that I am a really old lady when it comes to learning new things and handling large quilts! *frown* Tough decision, but by Sunday morning I was in agreement with myself. Forget it, and forget it NOW! And truly, I have! But it surely was fun. All the others in my group were fabric shopping, but I spent most of my time on or around that machine watching others try it out too. Okay; that's enough on the shop hop experience! It was indeed a fun day!
This week I have made a throw for the retired fireman who made the cedar chest the firemen gave me when I retired. He retired on short notice, and I didn't have time to make anything for him. He is a talented wood craftsman, and I think he will like this Fixit panel by Avlyn. It was fun putting the borders around it and quilting it best I could. It is 58" x 42". Haven't decided whether to mail it to him, or ask him and his wife to stop by my home when they come to town. Here is "Mr. Fixit - A Few of My Favorite Things."
Monday I guess one would say I fell off the wagon anyway. I went online and ordered a quilting book I've been wanting, and four battings for the four large quilts stacked on my back bedroom bed, waiting to be quilted! The battings were on sale 30% off, so I figured that would be better than having the quilter provide them. All that is supposed to arrive by Tuesday!
Not sure what will be next in the quilting area for me. I've got several non-quilty things I need to concentrate on around this place, but I'll have something going soon probably.
Have a great week-end, and if you are a football fan, may your favorite team win. This year, I really couldn't care less!

Sounds like you had fun at the convention center. I think you made the right decision in passing the Sweet 16 up, but it would be tempting! Check with the quilting and sewing shops around you, maybe one of them rents time on the longarms in the shop. I know some do here. That way you could try it out again, quilt some of your quilts without the big personal investment!
ReplyDeleteThe FixIt quilt is very nice, I have always loved that panel. It makes a really nice quilt. Have fun!
What a fun quilt! I am sure your friend will love it! And I don't count quilting books and batting as "falling off the wagon". Books are always useful and you need the batting to finish your quilts!

I'm in agreement with Liri: batting and books do not cause one to fall off any wagons! The FixIt quilt looks great. What's next? Something from your new book perhaps?!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the Fireman will just love his quilt! Batting doesn't count so you are still okay. Not a bad effort to come out of the store with just needles. Like you I can't justify a fancy quilting or long arm machine but I think they would be fun to try.
ReplyDeleteI love the FixIt quilt - again! And the shop hop at the convention center sounds like fun. I think I have spent just about all I will on fabric for the year - maybe ?!?!? Except for batting, of course. I am putting my civil war quilt together today, but I think I'll quit for the day & finish tomorrow. I will need to get batting for it. I got backing fabric at the fabric outlet in Dallas. I do like the way it's going together, though.
ReplyDeleteThe Fix-It panel is so cute. It will be a very happy surprise for your friend.
ReplyDeleteYou have been very good, staying on the wagon! ;)
Batting doesn't count, it is needed to finish quilts. And books, well they are literature right?
I made it through one month on the wagon. I got some fat quarters for a project that I had planned. Not bad considering the shop has everything on sale. (Such temptation).
Happy stitching.
