Mr. Fix It

Believe it or not, I began and finished a little quilt in January, 2011.  Here's the picture to prove it!  Well, okay, the center is a printed panel, with printed border strips, but hey, it's a 2011 start/finish! *grin*

I saw the panel made up at a quilt show last fall, but the vendor didn't have another panel with her, so I ordered it online, along with the border and backing fabrics.  I wanted to get it made by Christmas, but it just didn't happen!

You may  remember the addition to my sewing machine cabinet, and my granddaddy's bookshelf that a friend restored for me last year.  He and his wife also helped me with the estate sale.  When I first saw the panel, I knew I had to make the little quilt for him.  He and his wife both love quilts.  He also loves to sing, and the words printed on the panel can be sung to the melody of "My Favorite Things" from "Sound of Music".  (Sing it; I've been singing it all week!)  Of course, it is obvious the title I gave the quilt fits him to a tee --- "Mr. Fix It".  It is 57" x 35", just right for a recliner I think.  I simply machine stitched along the lines and around the tools.  The backing is dark brown with light blue nuts and bolts.

My son wanted to go with me this evening to deliver it.  I think the man really liked it, and I told him I had put a hanging sleeve on the back, just in case his wife wouldn't let him use it in the house, and suggested he might have to hang it in his woodworking shop.  He said right quick (as we say in Texas) that the quilt would be going on his recliner tonight.  When he began reading my gift letter, he seemed to start tearing up a bit, so I suggested he wait until after we were gone to read it; I think he was relieved.  I do hope he will enjoy it; it was just a silly whim I had, but to me, it seemed perfect for him --- he definitely is "Mr. Fix It", for anyone who needs something fixed!

Did you double click the picture, and then sing the song yet?  Well, try it!  I love it!!

I started cleaning my sewing closet today, but the little excursion put a halt to that.  Maybe tomorrow I can finish that job!  I found all that Christmas fabric I bought last year for all those little projects I never got around to!  My brain is scrambled from trying to decide what to do next!  I've run across lots of ideas I had saved for my "to make" imaginary list.  Decisions, decisions!  (And life is going to be getting in the way a lot for a few weeks, I fear!)

Keep up your beautiful quilting, dear ones!

  1. I love it! So perfect for your handyman and we know how much he appreciated it! With reference to your "found" fabric, I would suggest making an actual list. Mental lists tend to degrade, LOL! If it does nothing else, it will at least help you to remember!

  2. Yes! I sang the song. Maybe it will help me get rid of the Teddy Bear's Picnic song, which is still going through my mind incessantly! Of course, then I'll have another song in there. Is there something wrong with a person who does that? I sometimes wonder if I'm one of those obsessive/complusive people. The quilt is perfect for Mr. Fix-It! Maybe I should make one for DH. Do you remember where you ordered the panel from? It's a perfect manly quilt.

  3. My mom saw that same quilt and made it up for my dad for Christmas this year! I doubt my dad was as thrilled with it, though (he's been desensitized to the whole idea of getting a quilt). It's a great quilt and perfect for the manly men out there. I'm glad he liked it.

  4. We had that fabric in the shop and I thought it was cute. I don't know anyone whois 'handy' LOL.
Your quilt came out so cute and it sounds like your friend was really touched and happy that you made him a quilt.
I cleaned out my fabric too and I had the same problem that you are having....too many projects buzzing around in my brain.
BUT you already have a finished project in 2011!

  5. I sang the song as well! What a great quilt, perfect for your handyman. My imaginary list seems to have evaporated. Liri has the right idea about making an actual list.

  9. The quilt is very cute and just perfect for Mr. Fix-It! I need to go thru my fabric and re-organize everything, too. I have a lot of projects I want to work on but I have to finish what I already have going. I always get ahead of myself with ideas!
