A Little More Progress and A Busy Week

I'm sitting here with my computer in my lap, and wondering why I'm so very tired tonight, but as I thought back over the past week, I realize I really have been busy.  I think I can also honestly say I've accomplished a bit more than I thought I would.  Not all of it was quilting, but more was quilting than I had expected.

Monday began with helping with a funeral dinner and then cooking a dessert for another family whose wife and mother was buried on Tuesday; I also went to that funeral, after preparing a dish for Golden Agers at church that morning and then washing all the dishes for that!

When I got home after the funeral, I decided to go get a much needed haircut.  Then when I got home from that, I determined that I would get the sashings sewed on my Moda Block Heads blocks, and I did get that done, all 48 of them!  I put them up on my design wall, in no particular order, and they are still in the same position; I haven't touched them again!  I stuck some pins in them so they wouldn't fall off when I turn the fan on or open the patio door.  I know I'll have to re-arrange them someday, but other duties keep calling for attention.   I'll still have to put the sashings on the right side and bottom blocks when the final positions are settled, and a border, but here's the first look:

First Look; not final positions!
Wednesday I was just worn out, and didn't accomplish a bloomin' thing all day, except laundry!  Still blowing, coughing, and spitting from those mold allergies!  Thursday I did go to church quilting from 10 AM to  3 PM.  Only three of us showed up, but we got quite a bit done on our project for the Fall auction.  We still have a long way to go, but we'll make it.   Then I went to the grocery store and Walmart, and didn't get home until almost 6 PM.  It just take me twice as long to cover the store anymore for the things I need, but I shouldn't have to go back either place for a week or 10 days hopefully.

One of the 'other' duties that I got asked to do (while washing dishes at Golden Agers on Tuesday) is to make a quilt for the Spring youth auction at church, and they want it by April 7th if possible!  I said, "You've got to be kidding!" , but I've been doing a little planning and digging in my stash for enough matching patriotic fabrics to do something simple and quick.  I slept in until 9 AM Friday, and I had decided I needed to go get a little more fabric at the local Walmart, but they didn't have what I wanted, so I decided to go to Hobby Lobby about 20 miles away; they didn't have what I needed either.  So I looped back to the Walmart there; they didn't have ANY patriotic fabric; same situation as my local Walmart!  So next I went to my favorite quilt store in that town, and paid $11.99 a yard for the light fabric I needed for the donation quilt!  It was my only choice, and you won't believe this, but it is the same fabric I had bought there months ago, and have used some of it in my Moda Block Heads blocks; the white background with the red and blue music scattered around.  It will work perfectly for the donation quilt I'm sure.  I still cannot believe that Hobby Lobby had only four partial bolts of patriotic fabric, all mostly red and blue, no lights!  And then for two Walmarts to have NO patriotic fabrics here three months before Independence Day!  And really the quilt shop had only that one bolt of light background with red and blue, and they didn't even have it with the 4 or 5 bolts of patriotic fabrics they had.  What is going on here?  I've never seen it like this, at any time of year, really.  Oh well,  I'll get through it; I'm  using solid red, white, and blue anyway, for simplicity, except for the music print.  I told Hobby Lobby that I have more patriotic fabric in my house than they have in the store, and that's the truth!  I just didn't have enough of any of it to do what I want to do!

Friday afternoon while fabric was washing and drying, I pruned the roses finally; should have been done Feb. 15, but it was cold and raining then for days!  This week has had beautiful weather every day, but that will change Sunday evening, with rain predicted everyday until Thursday or Friday.  So this morning while it was beautiful and no wind, I decided to fertilize the rose garden and move some perennial phlox from under a tree over to the front of the rose garden so the phlox could finally get some sun this year!  Then I hosed down the patio, and came in the house at 3 PM, totally exhausted again.  After showering, I decided to go get a pedicure.  While barefoot on the patio, I could hear my toenails clicking on the concrete!  *giggle*  My feet still are tired, but they do feel much better!  I have to let someone else do my toenails; I just cannot get my body and feet in the right position to do it myself anymore.

I grabbed some Chicken Express for supper at home, and then, finally, determined that I would make one block for the donation project, just to see how it was going to work.  I've never done a block exactly like this before, and that's all I'll say right now, but here it is.  I think my plan should go fairly quickly if I can just get on it and stay!

Tomorrow is church, and I'll be going in the morning for sure.  If it's raining for the evening service, it probably won't be wise for me to get out, and take a chance on falling.  I hope we don't have electrical storms all week with the rain.  I have to go for my physical therapy initial evaluation Tuesday afternoon,  but I think that's all I'll have to be out for unless it clears up by Thursday for quilting again.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday and a wonderful week.

  2. You are such a busy lady! Just reading your adventures exhausts me. :)
Seems our Hobby Lobby usually has one side of a rack with patriotic fabrics, but I haven't looked at it for a while. Our WalMarts (2 within 10 miles--who thought that was a good idea?) have such a tiny fabric department, I would be surprised to find anything there.
That is a pretty, crisp looking block. Can't wait to see more. :)

  3. Phew! That was quite the week Love. I need a nap after reading about it. You are always so generous with your time. MODA BOTM looks pretty good on the design wall and if that blue and whote star is the beginning of your quilt, then it should be a cracker.

  4. You say my posts make you tired, but sheesh! You did a LOT this week and most of it sounds fairly fun. Maybe the stores were out of patriotic fabric because everyone is making patriotic quilts? Strange, though...but there is no shortage of swimsuits at my Wal-Mart...being in the 40s for highs this week, that seems reasonable... (perhaps they don't understand that fabric is something that requires more prep than bikinis?) I look forward to seeing the final quilt - the block looks good so far. Oh, and I like the blockheads layout with the striped sashing! That's going to be amazing!!!!

  7. Isn't it remarkable that no matter how much fabric we have in our closet(s) & chests, we will always need more! And, of course, the stores close to you didn't have what you need. The fabric with notes on it sounds perfect though! As to the pedicure, I called my older brother this morning and he said, "You will never guess what I'm doing right now." I said, "Well you better tell me." And he told me he was having a pedicure done!! I said "WHAT?" He's over 80 and his wife convinced him to get it done and I don't think this is his first one. He doesn't have his toenails painted with a color though. I couldn't stop laughing!!! Actually, DH should do that, but I'm sure he would NEVER think of such a thing. Hee Hee!!!

  9. Was the sashing fabric a diagonal print stripe? I had a piece of red and white that had a diagonal print to it. Your sashing looks great.
