Sick Again, but Having Fun Playing Around!

When the sun came out Tuesday and warmed my yard without the wind blowing like a gale, I decided I wanted to go outside and work in my flower beds.  I hadn't done that in so long, and I really didn't remember just how sore I'd be after doing that.   I went outside about 1 PM, and grabbed my long handled clippers, my rake, my gloves, and my little rolling stool to sit on when I get tired.  First I butchered all the Lantana shrubs down to the ground all along the side of the garage.  I've done that in years past, and I know I couldn't kill them even if I wanted to!  They were already beginning to send tiny little leaves out, so they will be out and about before long.  Then I raked leaves out of that bed, plus the one by the patio and then along the fence line in the back yard.  I noticed that a lot of the leaves I raked out were black with mold!  I should have stopped right then, but not being a quitter, I continued until I had three BIG Yard sized trash bags full!  My trash pick up was the next day.  (I should have been working in the rose garden! )

My son came after he got off work; he arrived about 5 PM and started mowing and edging.  We finished about the same time --- 7:30 PM!  I was bone tired after 6.5 hours out there.  Of course, anyone else could have done what I did in half that time; my cane, etc, really slows me down!  For sure, my son was tireede too after working all day on his job --- on his feet all day.  I was glad his wife was fixing him a good supper that he wanted to get home to .  At least I didn't have to fix supper for him!  I thawed a cup of potato soup from the freezer, took a shower and went to bed.  I don't think I moved all night!  I made a trip to the bathroom at 7 AM when the alarm went off, and went back to bed until 10 AM.  And who cares?   Certainly not me!

When I got up, I realized that every bone and muscle in my body was aching, my throat was sore, and my nose was (and still is!) running like a faucet!  All that mold I dug into had taken its toll on me!  I'm still not feeling good at all, and haven't been outside except to get the mail.  I'm constantly blowing my nose or spitting up what looks like raw egg whites!  But I have been having a little fun.

My sunroom was a disaster after finishing those Moda Block Heads.  I sorted, refolded, and put away all the usable fabrics.  The table was still covered with scraps, tiny scraps!  For some reason, I decided to sort them and put them in snack bags.  Actually I considered putting them all in the trash, but didn't.  Yesterday I decided to play with those silly little scraps a bit.   Some of you may remember telling me  to do things the way I want to.  You DO remember that, don't you?

Well, I've been considering making a crazy quilt someday, and I thought this might be a way to see I could.  I have 5  little 5" blocks on my design wall as an experiment.  I may make more; may not.  Here are the silly things I came up with, no rhyme or reason, but frankly, they were more fun than all those 6.5" Moda Block Heads with tiny exacting pieces that gave me fits!  (I had to get rid of my frustration some how, and these seemed to help, even though they may just sit in a box somewhere.)

In putting away the leftover good fabrics, I discovered a striped fabric that I think I will use for sashing with my Block Heads.  I pressed it and hung it up on the design wall and then pinned a few blocks on it just to see if it would work.  Then I found enough blue with little stars to use as cornerstone, and pinned three up also.    What do you think?  Will it work?  I think maybe it will.
Trial run for sashings and cornerstones
So many of the blocks have light outside edges, and the stripe has R/W/B, yet will contrast with at least most of the fabrics.  I have enough, and I'm fairly settled that I'll use it.  I'm not sure of the block arrangement, but I probably won't put them in the order they were given.  Don't know for sure yet.

The next few days will be busy!  Saturday luncheon here for GS#1's 25th birthday!  Of course, church Sunday, Monday a funeral dinner to help with at church, Tuesday is Golden Agers luncheon (old folks like me!) at church, and church quilting Thursday.  I didn't feel like going today to quilting.
I probably won't make much progress on the Block Heads next week!

Of course, I could have had it half together if I had been cutting and sewing instead of typing out this long epistle!  Sorry, but this is, after all, a sort of record of what's been going on in my life, like it or not.

At least it has been more fun for me today.  Hopefully tomorrow will be even better!

  1. I can't believe all you accomplished in your yard in 6.5 hours--and with a cane? I am tired having just read what you did!
Your little scrap blocks appear to have been very liberating to make. Good for you! You needed that after struggling through the blockheads.
I think your sashing and cornerstone fabrics look great! Good choice. :)

  2. I'm so sorry to hear you're not feeling well, but it sure looks like it's not slowed you down! The little crazy quilt blocks are great and a wonderful way to use up the tiny scraps we feel guilty about throwing away. Well, some of us feel guilty... And I love the striped sashing. It's perfect!

  3. First of all, the little blocks are just too cute. Plus, the sashing and cornerstone fabrics work well with your Block Head blocks. You might have two new quilt tops before too long! Have a great weekend with all of your activities.

  6. That's a lot of yard work so I'm not surprised you were tired at the end of a long day. Hope you are feeling better soon. I love the stripe fabric for your Moda Blocks. It works a treat! You 5 inchers are terrific - do make more.

  8. I can't believe you spent 6.5 hours doing yard work!! I can only do it in short increments and it takes that much longer to get things accomplished. And when I say short increments, I mean about 15 min, or 30 min at a time. Fortunately, we have a small yard. I do love the sashing you plan to use for the blockheads! I don't have all of mine finished yet, let along begin to think about the setting. Better get busy!!
