Another Little Quilt and Another Civil War Block

Surprise! It's not midnight, and I'm posting already! *giggle*

Today I finished nursing home little quilt No. 12. I used the thick, fluffy batting from the church, and I don't like working with it, but it did make the flowers pop up nicely when I stitched around them. I stitched in the ditch inside and outside the pink frames. The borders need more quilting, but probably won't get it! It is not quite as large as the others; it is 42 x 37".

Since I was energized, I decided to make my Civil War Week 5 block, Kansas Troubles. The yellow fabric is from a fat quarter Ruth sent me last week to enlarge my CW stash; it is called Cheddar. After looking at the Flicker pictures of all the blocks, I decided I wanted my block to be red and yellow. I did my best to cut and sew very carefully, and when I pressed it and put the ruler on it, it was exactly 8.5" square, no outside trimming! Another surprise, for sure!

I glanced out the window this afternoon just in time to see a big bird in what's left of the neighbor's tree. I grabbed my camera and managed to get this shot through my dirty windows! I don't know what he is, but I think he must be some kind of hawk; he's bigger than anything else I've seen around here. Any clues on what he is?

My yard got 3/10" rain last night; every little bit helps!

Next thing up is the little nearby quilt show on Saturday. I think I have to get my quilts there tomorrow, or maybe I can wait until Thursday; got to find out for sure! Tonight I'll make some sort of carrier for that big America quilt. The Kaleidoscope and Wave Salute will fit in pillow cases okay I think. I don't expect to win any ribbons at all; there are some really fine quilters in that group. I'm just grateful to be invited to display mine, particularly the America quilt. Maybe someone will like it. The pattern and construction are not what makes it special; it's what it says that is so important, to me anyway: "America - Founded as a Christian Nation, and By God's Grace, So Shall It Ever Be!" I hope people will take time to read the twelve quotations of our Founding Fathers.

Well, it's just now 6 PM, and it's dark already! I don't like this time change stuff! (It messes up my blogging time! hee hee!)

Everyone must be doing lots of quilting; new blog posts have been a little sparse. What are the rest of you gals working on now?

I'll be watching to find out!

  1. OK, I lost my comment, so I'll do it again. Maybe it will turn up, so bear with me. I looked in my "Birds of North America" book and it looks like a Northern Goshawk, which ranges all over Texas and reaches 23" long. Your pink quilt will be loved, I'm sure. And the CW block looks perfect! I have been sewing - new pillowcase for our new (to us) 5th wheel and a table runner for it also. We pick it up tomorrow. Our camera got stolen out of our truck along with a tool box - they smashed the window to get into it. I'll try posting pictures with my iPhone next time.
